The African American Studies Program at Colby College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professorship, beginning July 1, 2022. We welcome applications from candidates who conduct research on and write about African Americans and African American experiences in the United States. While disciplinary training is open, preference will be given to applicants who utilize methods and theoretical approaches that include extensive thick descriptions of African American social organization and culture. Areas of specialization include but are not limited to Black geography, critical race studies, history, religion, and social movements. The successful candidate will be expected to teach an interdisciplinary introductory course on African American cultures in the United States, in addition to courses related to their research interests that can contribute to the elective offerings for Colby’s African American Studies major or minor [https://www.colby.edu/catalogue/courses/aa/]. A Ph.D. is preferred, but an advanced ABD will be considered.

Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy statement, research statement, a representative sample of current scholarship, and the names of three references to contact. The teaching philosophy statement should include evidence of a commitment to diversity and experience with inclusive teaching.
