Job Details

The Department of Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Houston invites applications from outstanding scholars and teachers with an active agenda of research and publication in anthropology or any area of cultural studies related to anthropology. We will be hiring TWO new faculty members for appointments, one at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor and one at the rank of tenured Associate Professor of Anthropology.

Thematic and geographical areas of research focus are open, but there is some preference for scholars working on one or more of the following topics, to complement existing research strengths: race & racism, migration & citizenship, gender & sexuality, food, agriculture, religion, medical anthropology, digital humanities, media anthropology, environmental anthropology, labor, or global political economy.

For at least one of these hires, we will prioritize candidates working in applied anthropology, broadly understood, with a demonstrable commitment to public engagement, ideally with relevance to the Houston metropolitan region, prospectively in one or more of the following areas: social justice; environmental anthropology, climate change, and disaster; or medical anthropology.

The Department of Comparative Cultural Studies (CCS) at the University of Houston is an interdisciplinary department that is home to curricular programs in Anthropology, Liberal Studies, and Religious Studies. We seek new colleagues whose academic work would enhance and amplify the intellectual synergies that already exist across the department and in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS). New faculty will serve anthropology undergraduates and graduate students in CCS's MA degree program in anthropology, as well as other students in our College. For further insight into the range of thematic and topical interests we cover, and our distinct constitutive programs, applicants are encouraged to review the departmental website: https://www.uh.edu/class/ccs/

Applications should include: 1) a cover letter, including statement of research agenda and teaching experience; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) the names and contact information of three academic references; 4) two article- or chapter-length writing samples; 5) a sample course syllabus.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in anthropology or affiliated discipline or interdisciplinary field, or must provide evidence of anticipated completion of the Ph.D. and confirmation that it will have been awarded by June 2022. (Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon the selection of the final candidate).

All applications should be submitted electronically at:

http://www.uh.edu/human-resources/uh-careers

The deadline for submission of applications is November 15, 2021.

Company

The Department of Comparative Cultural Studies (CCS) at University of Houston is an interdisciplinary department offering degree programs in Anthropology (BA, BS, MA) Liberal Studies (BA, BS), Religious Studies (BA) as well as undergraduate minors in Anthropology and Religious Studies. Collaboration across these programs enhances the strengths of each and encourages cross-cultural learning and understanding.

Students in CCS explore the historical and ongoing production of cultures and the ways in which cultural differences affect the political, social, economic and aesthetic relationships that shape human communities. CCS prepares students to understand and apply a comparative approach to cultural difference and change in a globalized world.

In CCS, we are engaged in creating a shared space for interdisciplinary research and practice that includes community-engaged public scholarship and cultural preservation in Houston and the Gulf Coast Region.  As a department, CCS enhances the comparative cross-cultural opportunities available at UH by bringing together Religious Studies, Liberal Studies and Anthropology.

CCS provides students with the foundation for lifelong learning, and the intellectual tools for a wide range of careers — in education, research, media and communications, business, the non-profit sector, government and policy-making, law, healthcare, and various other professions.
