The Department of Sociomedical Sciences (SMS) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health is seeking to hire one or more Associate Professor (with tenure) level faculty. Although candidates with any interest area relevant to public health will be considered, we are particularly interested in:
- applications from social and behavioral scientists doing research and teaching in the areas of health equity and structural racism, climate change, data science, health communications, gender, or chronic diseases, including substance use and mental health;
- applications from scholars focusing on social policy, multi-level interventions, and prevention science; and
- applicants with disciplinary training in anthropology, psychology or sociology.
SMS faculty members have analyzed the broad social/structural, historical, cultural, and political contexts that shape health, and have engaged in teaching, advocacy, and community partnerships that advance public health policy and practice. We invite scholars who are interested in contributing to an active and vibrant community of public health scholars with various social and behavioral science backgrounds.
We strongly encourage applications from under-represented faculty and individuals with a commitment to mentoring under-represented students in public health.
Candidates should have research experience and training in public health and/or the social and behavioral sciences, and a strong record of scholarly achievement, peer-reviewed publications, and teaching experience. They are expected to have an established and successful record of extramurally funded research. We are particularly interested in highly motivated investigators with the necessary methodological and interpersonal skills to lead and sustain diverse academic teams and produce interdisciplinary collaborations and impact within the department and across the school and university. Substantial teaching and mentoring experience are also priorities. SMS represents and welcomes a range of disciplines including sociology, anthropology, psychology, history, and public health promotion. A doctoral degree in social or behavioral science or related field is required.
