Project Director/Archaeologist - Job Description

We are currently seeking resumes from qualified Project Director/Archaeologist for our Phoenix, Arizona office. This position is to develop, direct, and complete archaeological projects (survey, monitoring, testing, data recovery) for AZTEC's Cultural Resource Group.

Duties:

• Perform archaeological research and conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories.

• Develop, direct and participate in all types of archaeological investigations.

• Adhere to project schedules.

• Supervise junior staff.

• Prepare technical reports documenting the results of fieldwork and archival research.

• Perform technical and copy editing for cultural resource submittals.

• Evaluate and make recommendations regarding ARHP/NRHP eligibility and treatment of, as well as project effects to, cultural resources.

• Assess significance and identify appropriate National Register criteria of eligibility by applying aspects of integrity.

• Prepare graphics for reports using ArcGIS or coordinate graphic preparation with GIS staff.

• Develop research designed and work plans.

• Develop project scopes and budgets.

• Understand and assist clients with state, federal, and tribal cultural resources compliance.

• Coordinate with subconsultants and vendors.

• Work independently and resolve project challenges with minimal supervision.

• Communicate effectively and work closely with fellow employees.

• Perform travel that may include overnight stays for an extended period.

Project Director/Archaeologist - Required Skills:

• BA or BS in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field (MA or PhD preferred).

• Minimum of 5 years' experience; minimum 1 year experience supervising projects, junior staff and preparing technical reports.

• Understanding of Southwest prehistory and/or history, archaeological method and theory, and applicable federal and state CRM/HP laws.

• Experience successfully directing all phases of cultural resource investigation.

• Ability to qualify at supervisory level for state and federal archaeological permits.

• Successful management and completion of projects on time, within budget.

• Experience using GPS, GIS (Tablet, ArcGIS 10).

• Ability to generate, organize, and maintain adequate field records that meet state and federal standards and guidelines.

• Ability to perform fieldwork in adverse conditions (rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, arid environments, dense vegetation) and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Ability and willingness to travel.

• Reliable transportation and good driving record.

Project Director/Archaeologist - Other Required Skills:

• Graduate degree in anthropology/archaeology preferred

• Artifact analysis (ceramic, flaked stone, ground stone, and/or historic) Preferred.

• Understanding of prehistoric cultures of Arizona preferred.

• Professional experience in the Southwest preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to operate GPS and ArcMAP 10.8.1 preferred.

• Experience in geospatial data collection, analysis, and cartography preferred.

Working Conditions and Environment:

This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances.

Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project and be able to promote a positive team environment. A working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
