We have worked, over several decades, to create collaborative ties with local Coastal indigenous communities and create a welcoming and supportive learning environment at the University. The department has growing interest in advancing digital humanities initiatives on campus.

About the Position:       

The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Cultural Anthropology, to begin in September 2022. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. at the time of application and will have a strong foundation in ethnohistoric, linguistic, and/or biomedical approaches to sex and gender, emphasizing the methods of applied Visual Anthropology. We seek an interdisciplinary scholar with a specialization in Anthropology and/or Gender Studies who can not only articulate their contributions within Gender Studies, but also bring the critical tools of both fields to bear on contemporary issues of gender.

The faculty member would be based in the Anthropology Department for tenure/review with 1/3 of the annual teaching (generally two courses) dedicated to the Women, Gender and Sexualities Studies Program. In Anthropology, the new hire could teach courses including Introduction to Anthropology, Visual Anthropology, Sex and Gender, Qualitative Methods, and War and Human Rights or Death and Dying. In WGSS, they could teach Feminist and Queer Methodologies; and the Senior Capstone in addition to the introductory WGSS course of their choice. The faculty member would also be encouraged to develop their own courses in order to facilitate their development.

The successful candidate will be expected to fulfill teaching and mentoring responsibilities that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students. Candidates should address at least one of the topical areas outlined above in their cover letter, indicating how their past experiences, current interests and activities, and/or future goals could promote a work climate that values and supports inclusion.

The successful candidate will build and maintain a research program involving both undergraduate and graduate students and will collaborate with researchers in and beyond the department and program.

Required Qualifications:              

PhD (by time of application) in Anthropology, WGSS or related field

Experience in collaborative research across gender studies and visual anthropology, with a strong foundation in ethnohistoric, linguistic, and/or biomedical approaches to sex and gender

Evidence of the ability to develop and sustain a research program

Demonstrated ability to create an active and effective learning environment teaching university level courses in Anthropology and Gender Studies

Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

Record of scholarship focused on Gender Violence, Human Rights, and/or Digital Ethnography

Demonstrated ability to mentor and support the success of graduate students

Post-doctoral fellowship or additional relevant professional experience
