Position Description

We seek a broadly trained biological anthropologist who specializes in the study of human biology and behavior from an evolutionary and/or biocultural perspective. Topical areas may include (but are not limited to) the study of human nutrition and disease, global health/biomedicine, health inequality, reproduction, genetics and/or human adaptation. Geographic area is open, although special consideration will be given to candidates working in those areas in which Tulane has traditional strengths and/or is currently increasing its curricular offerings, including the Gulf South and Caribbean, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Teaching responsibilities will include four courses per year, and candidates must have a demonstrated ability or potential to teach Introduction to Biological Anthropology, Human Adaptation and Variability, as well as new (more specialized) courses related to their own research area.

As a four-field department, we are particularly interested in candidates whose research interests and expertise complement those of other faculty in our department as well as intersect with questions and topics of broad anthropological significance. An interest in establishing connections with interdisciplinary programs in Tulane’s School of Liberal Arts, such as environmental studies, gender and sexuality studies, cognitive studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, and Africana Studies, is also strongly desired.

Applicants must have a PhD in anthropology, a commitment to innovative graduate and undergraduate teaching, and an active research program. Candidates must have a strong foundation in evolutionary theory and a proven record of research and scholarly success, including plans for submission of NSF and/or NIH grant proposals. The successful candidate will be expected to work with PhD students in developing dissertation projects, have a strong commitment to both graduate and undergraduate teaching and training, and facilitate student access to field and/or laboratory research.

Company

Tulane's Department of Anthropology offers course work and degrees (BA, BS, MA, and PhD) in all of the major subdisciplines of the field: archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, physical anthropology, and anthropological linguistics. Anthropology at Tulane began with the establishment of the Middle American Research Institute http://www.tulane.edu/~mari and its associated library in 1924. The first full-time teacher of the subject was appointed to the Department of Sociology in 1938. The first B.A. Degree in anthropology was awarded in 1949, the first M.A. degree in 1954, and the first PhD. in 1962. The Department separated from Sociology in 1968, and now, after more than a quarter century of independent existence, it is recognized both within the university and within the wider profession as a center of academic strength, particularly for the study of the anthropology of Mesoamerica. Tulane University’s Stone Center for Latin American Studies is one of the world’s premier programs for the study of Latin America and the Caribbean. From its foundation in 1834, Tulane University has pursued a mission of advancing progressive and cutting-edge study and research in Latin America. The Stone Center coordinates the research and teaching activities of over 70 core faculty and 35 affiliated faculty and adjuncts in schools and departments across several Tulane campuses.
