Job Details
The Latin American & Latino Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an assistant professor of Migrant Health & Social Justice. We welcome applications from scholars in Latina/o/x, Native/Indigenous, Afrolatinx, Central American, and ethnic studies; medical anthropology; health communication; public health; health humanities; and related fields that explore intersections of health, migration, and social justice. We are particularly interested in thematic specializations including: decolonial, Indigenous, and collective health practices and epistemologies; political economies of care; health equity, disparity, and access; mental health; working conditions and occupational health; reproductive justice; migrants in transit; and intergenerational trauma. We are looking for a scholar who both grounds these themes in concrete migrant communities and links them with systemic dynamics (e.g., globalization, neoliberal restructuring, climate change, and social justice struggles).

Founded in 1994 by a visionary collective of faculty from across the UCSC campus who understood the urgency and need for transnational and hemispheric research, the Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) Program became the first of its kind in the world to connect area studies and ethnic studies. The Program offered a major and hired its first two LALS faculty in 1996, its third in 1998, and formally constituted as a department of Latin American and Latino Studies in 2001. In 2014, LALS successfully launched the first PhD program in LALS. Currently the department consists of ten (10) core faculty members and over forty (40) actively affiliated faculty based in other departments across Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
