Job Description
The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms by guiding justice innovators, nationally and internationally. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities.

Neighborhood Safety Initiatives (NSI;initiative), a program of the Center underway since 2015 and led by the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, is a comprehensive strategy to enhance public safety and strengthen community well-being in 15 public housing developments across New York City. The initiative aims to enhance safety and overall quality of life by strengthening collaboration and capacity among public housing residents. Since 2016, citywide meetings have been convened to share information and data, facilitate community engagement to identify neighborhood priorities, enhance the quality of life and spur collaboration and accountability among city agencies and local stakeholders.

A primary component of the program, NeighborhoodStat (NSTAT), aims to enhance safety and overall quality of life by strengthening collaboration and capacity among NYCHA residents. NSI works to advance the NSTAT process by assisting each of 15 designated communities to convene local stakeholder groups. NSTAT Stakeholder teams activities include collaboratively identifying community conditions, prioritizing local initiatives, accessing and analyzing data, identifying and leveraging resources, improving resident capacity through trainings; and implementing participatory placekeeping projects and policy recommendations. These placemaking projects and policy recommendations address structural racism, local concerns and enhance public safety, reduces victimization, promoting healing and improves well-being. The initiative's overarching goal is to build community agency in policy change within a social, racial and spatial justice framework.

Neighborhood Safety Initiatives (NSI), a program of the Center, is seeking an Associate Director of Capacity Building to support a resident-driven community organizing initiative in partnership with the Mayor's Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP). Reporting to the Director and Deputy Director, the Associate Director of Capacity Building will assist in the planning and implementation of resident and staff capacity building strategies within the Center's Neighborhood Safety Initiative (NSI), including but not limited to training staff and residents; integrating the project's working principles and best practices into toolkits; creating training and development materials; overseeing capacity building outcomes and evaluation processes; coordinating the project's interagency collaboration regarding training and training resources; and representing the Center and MAP at citywide events, meetings, panels and forums.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Community Resiliency Training:
  • Host, facilitate and co-facilitate virtual and in-person training workshops or seminars to support capacity building for resident teams in community organizing, coalition building, direct action, mutual aid networks and collectives, placekeeping and project management;
  • Conduct outreach, secure commitments or procure practitioners and educators to advise, facilitate and/or co-facilitate resident trainings and public seminars;
  • Research and develop training strategies and modalities to create custom workshops and build a training action plan or curriculum that supports resident skill-building;
  • Create and incorporate a mechanism that polls trainee satisfaction, gathers feedback on content and reports on skill building and achievement milestones;
  • Ensure the timely production, promotion and accessibility of training details (date/time/location/platform), training materials, and training polls or surveys;
  • Seek consent to record trainings, when appropriate, and work to edit content for online or digital accessibility;
  • Grow the audience and deepen public engagement in the project's community resiliency training series via one-to-one conversations, focus groups, surveys, and other engagement techniques;
  • Support the creation of resident-driven and/or resident-made content for knowledge and skill sharing across resident teams;
  • Onboard, train and supervise resident fellows to support skill-sharing and capacity building outcomes, when funding allows;
  • Promote resident fellowship opportunities, when available.

Toolkits and Training Materials:
  • Create and work with project leadership and supervisors to deliver custom staff trainings that support skill-building and meet project goals;
  • Procure or create and update resident and staff training materials and toolkits to support skill building in key project priority areas like facilitation, problem-solving, coalition building, direction action, resiliency and others;
  • Work with project leadership and program managers to integrate toolkits into working practice;
  • Identify and memorialize existing best practice, and work with project leadership and supervisors to integrate working strategies and principles across program managers and resident teams;
  • Seek opportunities and coordinate staff and resident site visits or virtual meet-ups with other communities, collectives and organizers to create knowledge sharing, skill building and networking opportunities;
  • Store all training materials and toolkits in an organized and centralized location to ensure staff and resident accessibility;
  • Work with key department leaders to publish training seminars, materials and feedback tools.

Needs Assessment, Referral Network and Mutual Aid:
  • Manage and enhance the project's needs assessment and referral system with support from key team members and resident volunteers;
  • Grow the project's citywide and local resource guides, and help to integrate the guide into the team's service delivery practice;
  • Support the development of local mutual aid networks, when requested or appropriate;
  • Track and keep key metrics for the project's referral network and produce weekly progress reports;
  • Build a database of local community-based organizations and mutual aid networks that can support a pipeline between resource navigators and communities in need.

Evaluation:
  • Review program data, report data insights to leadership, program managers and partners, and iterate curriculum plans, as appropriate;
  • Develop and keep all relevant training data, including resident and staff attendance, resource input, trainee feedback and insights, outcomes and impact via baseline data, process evaluations and clearly defined goals for success;
  • Keep all data and data insights organized, updated and accessible to team members and key partners.

Administration:
  • Create, track and keep project timelines and regularly confer with project leadership regarding project planning, iterations and adjustments;
  • Produce a monthly training report;
  • Attend all scheduled staff and resident trainings to provide context and support for trainees;
  • Co-facilitate team meetings to plan, coordinate, implement, and share resource that support ground-level operations across sites, upon request;
  • Attend relevant partner meetings and provide on-going updates to key personnel, upon request;
  • Research and procure any necessary technology, software and program supplies to conduct training seminars.
  • Work with project staff and the Center's development team to identify funding opportunities that support continued professional development opportunities for residents and staff;
  • Work closely with the Project Director, Deputy Project Director, Director of Neighborhood Strategies, key Center and project staff, and the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice to develop, manage and advance all NSI tasks and timelines by offering hands-on, project-based and activity-centered training and professional development opportunities;
  • Other duties, as necessary.

Qualifications:
  • BA required, Master Degree preferred (social work, urban planning, education, sociology/ anthropology or relevant social sciences) or equivalent experience;
  • 3+ years experience and demonstrable success community organizing, coalition building and/or placekeeping;
  • 3+ years experience supervising and/or providing project management support for community organizers or community organizing or engagement projects;
  • Sound ability to work with diverse communities in an empathetic, comfortable and non-judgmental manner;
  • Demonstrable success as a host, creator, facilitator and/or educator of organizing or political education curriculum;
  • Experience developing, coordinating, customizing and facilitating training for diverse audiences, required;
  • Current network or knowledge of innovative and cutting edge trainers and training modalities;
  • Expert-level content knowledge in topics related to community organizing, community-driven development, urban studies, and/or management strongly preferred;
  • Professional experience in curriculum development, group facilitation, and training delivery required;
  • Experience in organizational development, project development, project implementation and management, and/or strategic planning are a plus;
  • Strong organizational skills, including ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent skills related to PowerPoint, word processing, spreadsheet and database programs;
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment, create collaborative relationships with colleagues, and work well with multiple stakeholders.

Position Type: Full-time, flexible schedule with the ability to work some weekends and evenings.

Position Location: Manhattan, NY with travel to sites across all 5 boroughs

Compensation: Salary range starts at $68,000 and is commensurate with experience.
