The Anthropology Department at Colby College is a small, dynamic department focused on cultural anthropology. We invite applications for a tenure track position at the assistant professor level for a cultural anthropologist in the fields of technology, design, and/or artificial intelligence (AI) beginning on September 1, 2022.
We welcome a range of research specialties that could include but are not limited to the social, racial and ethical dimensions of AI technologies and algorithms; surveillance; DNA tests, genomes and related health technologies; social media; cryptocurrency; gaming and virtual worlds; indigenous data sovereignty; inclusive design; climate justice; hacker cultures and politics; and/or participatory research in the labs of and with AI scientists, engineers, and designers.
The successful candidate will teach 4.5 courses a year (generally alternating 4 and 5 courses a year), including Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, with additional courses to be decided in conjunction with departmental needs. Depending on their particular areas of interest and specialization, the successful hire could engage with campus-wide programs and initiatives, such as the Davis Institute for Artificial Intelligence (https://artificial-intelligence.colby.edu/), Public Humanities (https://www.colby.edu/centerartshumanities/public-humanistic-inquiry-labs/ ), or Environmental Humanities (https://web.colby.edu/environmentalhumanities/).
Applicants must have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence, Ph.D. (preferred) or advanced ABD.
Please submit applications through Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/95084. Include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, contact information for three references, research statement, and a statement of teaching philosophy that demonstrates commitment to the value of diversity and to inclusive teaching. Please provide a representative sample of your scholarship.
Applications received by November 5, 2021 will be reviewed in full. Finalists should be prepared to provide letters of reference upon request. Initial interviews will be conducted online. For further information, contact search committee chair Winifred Tate, wltate@colby.edu.
