The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an innovative, visionary, and inclusive leader to serve as its chair. UAB is a Carnegie Level 1 research university and academic health center named the Top Young University in the U.S. in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Research in the Department of Anthropology spans the four fields of anthropology. The department offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. The undergraduate program and course offerings span the four fields of anthropology. At the graduate level, the program is topically specialized in the anthropology of peace, human rights, conflict resolution, sustainability, and social justice. The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar in any domain of anthropology with the leadership skills and vision required to lead a department that emphasizes research excellence and quality undergraduate and graduate instruction. The candidate will assist in furthering development of the existing Master’s degree program in Anthropology of Peace and Human Rights and expanding engagement with the Department of Art and Art History in a new Master’s program in Cultural Heritage Studies. Appointment at the full professor with tenure level is expected. A doctoral degree in anthropology or a related field is required.
