Description: Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in biological anthropology. We seek a scholar with an active research agenda that focuses on biocultural processes related to health and disease within Latin American or Caribbean populations. Candidates who study living populations and topics related to health and disease, diet and nutrition, growth and development, and related themes are encouraged to apply. Research agendas with clear theoretical foundations in the scholarly fields of evolutionary medicine and the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) will be viewed favorably.

Candidates should have an active lab and/or field research program that can involve undergraduates and graduate students, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community collaborations and public engagement. We seek a scholar with holistic training in anthropology or the social sciences. Candidates who exhibit a deep commitment to research, graduate education, and show a strong record and ongoing potential for obtaining external grants and publishing in refereed journals are an ideal fit with the University mission.

The teaching load is 2:2, which will include an introductory Biological Anthropology course, taught on a rotating basis, mid- to upper-level subfield-specific courses for the curriculum, and undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s research specialties. We are particularly interested in candidates who show promise in connecting with other research units on campus such as CLACX (https://as.vanderbilt.edu/clacx/), Evolutionary Studies Initiative  (https://www.vanderbilt.edu/evolution/), and/or the Institute for Global Health (https://www.vumc.org/global-health/welcome), among others.

Company

The academic study of religion on the campus of Vanderbilt University starts with the Department of Religious Studies. Our first and primary mission is to educate undergraduates in the nature, history, and function of different religious traditions, individually and comparatively. Care is taken to situate these religions in their cultural and social contexts, while examining the critical roles they play in shaping individual and group perspectives on the conduct of human affairs. The department offers a major in Religious Studies, a minor in Religious Studies, and an Honors track. At present, areas of concentration include (alphabetically) African-American Religious Traditions, Buddhism and Asian Religious Traditions, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Wherever possible, the appropriate languages are strongly encouraged, complicating the student’s understanding in ways impossible by any other method. The general approach to the study is initially descriptive, but multidisciplinary, while providing the student with a variety of analytical tools, theoretical perspectives, and practical methods for interpretation. The comparative component ensures that students recognize the commonalities of various religious traditions, thereby developing a sense of the abstract idea of generic ‘religion’ while maintaining a strong sense of the historical differences among traditions. Successful students should expect to emerge from the program with a set of analytical skills and disciplined perspectives on this all-important feature of human experience that will prepare them to thrive in an increasingly pluralistic, global community.
