Position Summary:
The Department of Anthropology at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is seeking a Public Archaeology Coordinator for the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) Southwest Region.
The Public Archaeology Coordinator raises awareness and a sense of stewardship for archaeological resources. The Coordinator is responsible for organizing public outreach and education, as well as developing opportunities and strategies for engaging diverse publics on archaeological issues. This requires extensive travel within the region of Glades, Hendry, Collier, Charlotte, and Lee Counties (may assist in other counties and regions as needed). In addition, the Coordinator will cultivate collaborative relationships with and assist state and local governments and the Florida Division of Historical Resources within the region.
The Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) is dedicated to the protection of cultural resources, both on land and underwater, and to involving the public in the study of their past. Regional centers around Florida serve as clearinghouses for information, institutions for learning and training, and headquarters for public participation in archaeology. Summary of Responsibilities Include:
- Assisting the Regional Center's Director with public relations, the development and management of outreach programs, and the establishment of collaborative relationships in Southwest Florida, which encompasses Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry, and Glades counties.
- Creating media content, virtual and in person programming for K-12th grade children.
- Creating media content, virtual and in person programming for adults.
- Instructing workshops.
- Developing new programs, conducting archaeological field and lab work with various regional partners.
- Assisting local partners with interpretation of archaeological information (e.g. signage at a state park).
- Serving on organizing committees for conferences and events within the region
- Conduct outreach and education activities for a broad cross-section of Southwest Florida's population
- Assist the Southeast Public Archaeology Coordinator and Southeast/Southwest Regional Director as needed
- Create written and video content to further FPAN's mission.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree or higher from an accredited institution in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, Science Communication, or related field; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, Science Communication, or related field and two years of appropriate experience required.PhD (in a related area) or Master's degree preferred.Strong communication skills (written and verbal) are required.Must be extremely self-motivated and capable of developing projects and leading them through to completion, but flexible to work with partners with various degrees of funding and technical capacity. Ability to work remotely. This is a home office based position; however, employee must reside within or a reasonable commuting distance of FAU's Davie campus and assigned region (Glades, Hendry, Collier, Charlotte, and Lee Counties). Ability to travel locally to meetings and events (3-5 days per week), to FAU's Davie campus (approximately 2 times per month); and overnight (approximately 2-5 days a month). A vehicle for work travel will be provided. Availability to work evenings (approximately 1-2 per week) and weekends (approximately 2 per month).A valid driver's license is required.Ability to conduct fieldwork in South Florida-this includes working in temperatures regularly above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and carrying 50lbs or more of equipment.Fluency in Spanish or Creole (ideally native-speaker) is preferred. Applicants who can demonstrate experience working in diversity and inclusion are preferred.Experience working with or in government policy at the local, state, or federal level is preferred.Technical capacity for one or more of the following: videography, GIS, scientific diving, coastal restoration, photogrammetry, drone pilot, or similar is preferred.
