Job Details

The Division of Humanities of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is searching for suitable candidates to fill a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the discipline of Chinese Anthropology.  The field of specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose research is fieldwork based, border-crossing, and interdisciplinary.  The position is to be filled beginning in Fall 2022.  The successful candidate will take part in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, develop a strong body of scholarship in his/her field of specialization, and contribute service to the university and broader communities.

Apart from a master’s degree program in Chinese Culture and a research postgraduate degree program at both the master’s and doctoral levels under the broad umbrella of the Division of Humanities, the Division offers general education courses for all undergraduates at HKUST.  Together with the Division of Social Science, the Division of Humanities offers a multidisciplinary undergraduate major program of Bachelor of Science in Global China Studies.

Applicants should have a PhD degree from a reputable university and show promise of becoming a colleague with a publication record of international impact, a strong record of grant application, proven commitment and performance in both undergraduate and graduate teaching, and demonstrated service to the academic community and the public.  English is the medium of instruction and administration at HKUST, but proficiency in Chinese is expected.  HKUST is an institution promoting diversity.  We therefore strongly encourage suitable candidates of diverse backgrounds to apply.

Starting salary will be highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits including annual leave and medical/dental benefits will be provided.  Housing benefits will also be provided where applicable.  Initial appointment will normally be on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement.  A gratuity will be payable upon completion of contract.

Application Procedure Applications should be sent to anthrolit@ust.hk together with (i) full CV; (ii) a statement of research, teaching, and service; (iii) no more than three writing samples of chapter/article length work, all in PDF format; and (iv) record of teaching performance.  Three reference letters should also reach the above email address directly from the referees.  The Search and Appointments Committee of the Division will begin to review the applications from 20 October 2021.  The review process may continue until the position is filled. (Information provided by applicants will be used for recruitment and other employment-related purposes only.)

Company

In 1989, the leaders of Hong Kong saw a need to build a new, research-focused university to support the city’s future ambitions—to become not just the financial hub of Asia, but also a center of knowledge advancement, economic growth and influence in the Pearl River Delta Region, leveraging Hong Kong’s unique status with China who just recently opened to reforms.

The herculean task—building an institution with global ambitions from the ground up—soon attracted a group of high-spirited scholars from around the globe, who embraced the challenge with open arms and started what would become the eventual Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

“I am proud to see that HKUST has not diverted from the mission its founders have bestowed upon it – to create, and not to replicate; and to assist in the economic and social development of Hong Kong and beyond.”

-Professor Wei SHYY, President, HKUST

Today, HKUST has risen through the ranks and become a global powerhouse in tertiary education as a result of our continuous pursuit of excellence in everything we do, leaving its mark in life science, engineering, business education, humanities and social science, and much more.

Innovation is in our DNA, and we welcome everyone to join our cause to change peoples’ lives for the better—as long as you are willing to defy the odds and push yourself beyond your limits to make a difference.
