POSITION DESCRIPTION

The University of California Irvine’s Department of Anthropology invites applications for a position at the level of Assistant/Associate Professor with research focused on environmental injustice in Black communities and subsequent health disparities. This call for applicants is part of cluster hire through UCI’s Black Thriving Initiative (BTI). Through BTI, UCI aspires to become the nation’s foremost destination for Black people to thrive as undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni and communities served by the campus in California, the United States and around the world. (For more information about the UCI BTI, please visit https://inclusion.uci.edu/uci-black-thriving-initiative/.)

The Department of Anthropology seeks candidates whose research examines and engages with diverse stakeholders in environmental injustice (including diverse community members, government agencies, business sectors, activist organizations, media outlets, etc), how they perceive both problems and restorative possibilities in Black communities, and the many cultural and social dynamics that undermine inclusive prosperity and Black thriving. Successful candidates will have research programs that advance understanding of Black experiences and perspectives in environmentally stressed communities while also providing critical perspective on ways that structural underpinnings -- including racism, white supremacy, and racial capital -- have historically and actively worked against Black well-being. UCI’s Anthropology Department has a reputation for experimental and interdisciplinary methods robustly tied to social justice commitments so will be a welcoming environment.

This position is part of a BTI Environmental Health Disparities cluster hire through which UCI aims to build capacity for collaborative, multidisciplinary research to understand and address ways environmental stress and racism contribute to health disparities in Black communities. The cluster includes the Program in Public Health, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, the School of Social Sciences, and the School of Medicine. In Southern California, we see extreme environmental health disparities in Black communities, including those living near the Los Angeles International Airport and the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. This hiring program and UCI’s Black Thriving Initiative provides an opportunity to build the foundation for an impactful Center for Environmental Health Disparities Research. For more information about the Center, please visit https://sites.uci.edu/cehdr/.

The Environmental Health Disparities cluster hiring program builds on UCI’s enduring commitment to inclusive excellence. A recipient of the STEMM Equity

Achievement (SEA Change) Institutional Bronze Award, UCI is a federally recognized Asian American Native American Pacific Island Serving Institution (AANAPISI) and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The ADVANCE program for Equity and Inclusion in the Office of Inclusive Excellence offers several resources for recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce, including the Chancellor’s ADVANCE Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Academic Diversity, Dependent Care Travel Awards, and participation in the Faculty Success Program through the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. UCI offers competitive salary and attractive benefits packages, including a housing assistance program for new faculty members.

UC Irvine is one of ten campuses of the highly regarded University of California system. With approximately 37,000 students, 1,500 ladder-rank faculty members, a highly ranked medical school, and over $500 million per year of extramural grant funding, our campus offers a wealth of opportunities for research collaboration and is ranked among the top 10 public universities in the US. More information is available on the Department of Anthropology’s website at https://www.anthropology.uci.edu/

Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. The Department of Anthropology recognizes the value of diversity in its faculty and strongly supports UCI’s mission for equity and inclusiveness. We are committed to ensuring accountability, providing training and education, conducting responsive research and building sustainable partnerships. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidate finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct.

To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full), to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full), will be subject to institutional reference checks.
