Departmental Overview

The Division of Social Sciences in the College of Letters & Science is the largest of Berkeley's academic divisions, with an annual budget of approximately $130M, approximately 280 permanent faculty FTE and undergraduate enrollment which averages over 31,000 per semester. It is also among Berkeley's most heterogeneous divisions, with faculty studying every dimension of the human experience. Its academic departments include African American Studies, Anthropology, Demography, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Geography, Gender and Women's Studies, History, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. The Division of Social Sciences is also home to the Interdisciplinary Social Science Programs, the Social Science Matrix, D-Lab, and several related research units.

Responsibilities

* Makes recommendations to deans that affect the strategic direction of the organization. Provides an in-depth review and analysis of academic personnel cases submitted to the Dean, with an emphasis on senate titles. Analyzes merit and promotion cases, faculty retentions, searches and other faculty issues within the College and provides recommendations and analytical material to the Assistant Dean of Academic Personnel, CAO, Associate Deans, and Dean. Prepares extensive background information for senate appointments, merits, promotions, retentions and other senate actions; independently drafts Dean's letters for ladder-rank academic personnel cases and requests by applying a breadth of knowledge of multiple disciplinary areas.
* Reviews cases, drafts Dean's letters for non-senate personnel actions, leave requests, recall appointments, affiliations, endowed chairs, and other miscellaneous requests. Counsels senate, non-senate faculty, and other academic employees concerning complex and / or particularly sensitive work-related or career-related problems.
* Provides advice to deans and recommends strategies for addressing sensitive situations involving academic appointees and / or requesting exceptions to policy. Identifies and utilizes precedent-setting situations to recommend new organizational procedures and practices. Devises solutions to unusual requests from academic departments on academic personnel issues. Performs and/or oversees special projects involving a broad range of College issues including academic planning and academic personnel administration. Conducts investigations into complaints involving academic appointees; provides feedback to management and makes strategic recommendations Serves as an advisor to the Dean, department chairs, department staff, Berkeley Regional Services, and faculty regarding academic personnel administration. Functions as technical expert to other college academic personnel professionals, advising and coordinating processes and procedures for a variety of units within the Division. Serves as Division liaison to key campus office staff (Academic Personnel Office, Office for Faculty Equity and Welfare, other dean's offices, other UC campus departments) that oversee academic personnel administration. Represents the Division in informal and formal complaint resolutions processes. Other duties related to academic personnel as assigned.

Required Qualifications

* Exceptional written communication skills to address complex issues and present succinct, nuanced analyses. Excellent correspondence skills to communicate diplomatically with all levels of the community and ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
* Ability to analyze complex management issues, develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel.
* Advanced knowledge of, or can quickly learn, systemwide and organization policies, union contracts, procedures and practices that govern academic HR administration. Advanced knowledge of, or can quickly learn, organization and college goals, priorities and values and the legal and human implications of decisions. Requires advanced ability to apply / interpret systemwide, organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.
* Ability to apply/interpret campus policies and procedures that govern academic personnel, including specialized procedures that apply to interdisciplinary initiatives. Knowledge of trends in academia, especially in areas of academic planning, human resource management and administration.
* Ability to analyze complex management issues, develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel.
* Ability to use high-level discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality. Advanced political acumen and sensitivities to the differing perspectives and political circumstances within all levels of the Campus as well as external constituencies.
* Excellent critical and innovative thinking to address complex issues and present nuanced analyses. Strong service orientation, attention to detail, and ability to follow-up on issues. Ability to multi-task and prioritize work with demanding time-frames.
* Demonstrated initiative, tact and planning skills.
* Demonstrated strong analytical and computer skills to create reports, conduct analysis and develop recommendations.
* Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

* Advanced knowledge of, or can quickly learn, UC academic merit and recruitment policies, procedures, and practices.
* Knowledge of, or can quickly learn, system wide and campus policies, procedures and practices that govern academic HR administration.
* Experience with UC Path, AP Bears, AP Recruit and.or comparable systems.

Salary & Benefits

This is a monthly paid (exempt) position. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
