History Nebraska is seeking an innovative and highly motivated archeologist to serve as Nebraska's State Archeologist and manage the Archeology team. This position directly or indirectly manages up to ten staff members; assists state agencies and consulting firms in complying with historic preservation law; consults with Indigenous tribes; serves as NAGPRA and burial discovery coordinator; conducts and coordinates research; and provides education and training programs. The State Archeologist works with important research collections and irreplaceable archeological properties and we are looking for an individual who possesses a life-long passion for archeology and history. History Nebraska is a statewide educational institution that connects people to the past through our library and research center, conservation facility, interpretive sites, and the state archeology and historic preservation offices. **Annual salary range is $59,020-$88,533, commensurate with education and experience, if approved.**

Examples of Work :

  • Develop guidelines for state agencies and the public to comply with the Nebraska Archeological Resources Protection Act.
  • Assist law enforcement and other parties in the discovery and recovery of human skeletal remains and work with tribes and other descendants in repatriation through compliance with state and federal burial protection laws.
  • Prepare and manage budgets and agreements for the State Archeology Office to conduct cultural resource management projects for government agencies and private industry. Seek grant, private funding, and partnership support.
  • Oversee cultural resource management projects from small, simple several acre surveys to large-scale multi-year mitigation projects.
  • Develop a set of research and preservation priorities for the archeology of Nebraska. Engage in and direct research, and encourage and coordinate archeological investigations undertaken within the state.
  • Present the results of Nebraska archeological research to the public and professional communities through lectures, publications, and social media.
  • Be an advocate within and outside of History Nebraska, for archeological resources and those that care about them, within the context of existing laws and regulations.
  • Work with the History Nebraska Collections Division to ensure material culture, digital, and hard copy documents are accessible, organized, and well-preserved for use by staff and outside researchers.
  • Consult with Indigenous tribes and nations during the course of repatriation and historic preservation efforts.
  • Provide staff supervision and technical assistance.
  • All other duties assigned.


Qualifications / Requirements :

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in history, historic preservation, public/business administration or other field related to area of responsibility including: American studies, architecture, archeology, anthropology, archival studies, historic preservation, library science, museum studies or related field AND two years' experience in cultural resource management; OR a Master's degree in any of the above mentioned fields. Experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED: Graduate degree in Anthropology, North American Archeology, or Geography/History with an Archeology emphasis; meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Professional Qualifications for Archeology; keen understanding of cultural resource management and federal/state historic preservation and burial protection legislation and regulations; strong background in Great Plains.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Understanding of archeological methods including: background research, survey, excavation, mapping, Geographic Information System (GIS) application and best practices in laboratory analysis, dissemination of results and curation.
  • Knowledge of federal laws and regulations governing archeological and historic properties (i.e., National Historic Preservation Act, Archeological Resources Protection Act, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) and experience in management and administration of Section 106 review and compliance.
  • In addition to a working knowledge of GIS, have extensive experience with MS Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to present archeology to the public via print, exhibit, public/professional talks, and social media.
  • Ability to prepare budgets, scopes of work, and proposals related to cultural resource management work.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to directly or indirectly manage up to 10 individuals within the context of a larger multi-facetted agency.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely both in technical reports, research papers, and more public-facing documents.
  • Have an engaging personality with the ability to effectively and politely communicate with the public, landowners, government and tribal officials, and individuals in planning and engineering fields. #cb
