Our client is seeking a Lead Archaeologist / Principal Investigator to support projects primarily located throughout the US Southwest, with a focus on southeastern New Mexico and West Texas, however familiarity with additional states is a plus. This position will be with a growing environmental services practice and is ideally full-time, with opportunity for a seller/doer to develop into a program leader; a part-time / as-needed work arrangement may be possible if desirable for the right candidate. The successful candidate will be comfortable acting as the technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for scoping and executing cultural resources management tasks throughout a project's full lifecycle.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and lead Class I through III Cultural Resources Surveys
  • Lead field crews and manage the field survey effort
  • Complete and submit technical reports to the relevant agencies in a timely and efficient manner
  • Prepare scopes and cost estimates for archaeological tasks, and assist with the overall preparation of proposals
  • Monitor cultural resources budgets on projects and communicate in advance when scope / budget changes may be necessary
  • Apply for, maintain, and conduct necessary reporting for cultural resource use / archaeological investigation permits with the necessary agencies
  • Oversee and coordinate archaeological project teams, including junior staff, part-time staff, sub-consultants, and/or subcontracted archaeological firms
  • Contribute to non-archaeological work products as necessary, primarily related to environmental compliance, permitting, and data processing tasks


Qualifications:
  • Meets the Secretary of Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeology, including an advanced degree in Archaeology or Anthropology
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience leading cultural resources projects as the Principal Investigator
  • Extensive knowledge and experience working under NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA, Antiquities Code of Texas, and New Mexico Cultural Properties Act
  • Currently holds or has ability to secure the following within 6 months: Individual and organizational cultural resource use permits with the BLM; On the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division's list of approved state Principal Investigators; General Archaeological Investigation Permit for New Mexico State Land; Demonstrated good standing as an approved Principal Investigator by the Texas; Historical Commission and Louisiana Office of Cultural Development; Access to restricted agency archaeological databases including NMCRIS, THC Archaeological Sites Atlas, and Louisiana Cultural Resources Map
  • Experience leading consultations with federal, state, and tribal agencies
  • In good standing as a Registered Professional Archaeologist, or ability to be registered within 6 months preferred
  • Network of technical experts for specialized cultural investigation phases, such as for human burial excavation, analyses of archaeological samples, etc. preferred
  • Familiarity with or ability to assist with natural resources project work, such as wetland delineations and T&E species surveys preferred
  • Familiarity using ArcGIS and other desktop Esri products, and collecting/managing GPS data from field geospatial tools such as Trimble devices, ArcGIS Field Maps, and/or ArcGIS Collector/Survey123
  • Ability and willingness to travel for field work, including overnight travel and occasionally non-standard hours, as-needed for client projects; expected travel up to 40% of the time
  • A valid driver's license and clean driving record
