Ipsos Ethnography Center of Excellence is a specialist team who work exclusively on ethnographic and cultural research projects. Using techniques borrowed from anthropology, filmmaking, market research and the wider social sciences, we offer our clients the best ethnographic research in the industry. Our work regularly wins awards – we’re a recent Market Research Society and Association of Qualitative Research winner.

We work with a large range of clients and areas of research.

The team is made up of different but complementary backgrounds, including filmmakers, visual anthropologists, semioticians and market researchers. Everyone shares a passion for doing thoughtful, interesting, and impactful research.

Role Overview

No day will be the same – you will be exploring the lived experience of arthritis patients one day and analyzing video about SUV owners the next. You’ll be exposed to a wide range of clients, brands, organizations and sectors from the start.

As part of a project team, you’ll be supporting senior colleagues and project managers to deliver work for specific clients. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with a freelance team of ethnographic filmmakers, helping them prepare for fieldwork, overseeing their filmmaking work and analyzing their footage.

We regularly work alongside other Ipsos teams and so the role will involve getting to know many other people across the business. You will also liaise with external suppliers, such as recruitment agencies and translation companies.

There will be opportunities to carry out fieldwork yourself in this role and also to learn the ropes in filmmaking, should you wish to go into the field solo or edit ethnographic video yourself, but it is not required.

Key Responsibilities & Expectations

This role is focused on supporting the day-to-day running of ethnographic research projects.

You will be exposed to different clients and will attend client meetings as well as internal meetings.

More specifically, responsibilities will include:

  • Attend client briefs and meetings
  • Assist in putting together proposals and preparing costs
  • Input into to writing ethnographer briefings
  • Attendance on fieldwork with a supporting role to play
  • Analyze output and look for patterns and stories in data
  • Report writing alongside senior team members
  • Interaction with clients on project-related matters
  • Build awareness and understanding of finances and financial management of projects
  • Build industry and research expertise
  • Build an awareness of relevant clients and their business environments
  • Become knowledgeable about the research industry, client sectors and hot topics in innovation
  • Keep up-to-date with relevant Ipsos MORI solutions and understand market positioning

Skills & Experience 

  • Fluency in English – any other languages desirable
  • Social sciences degree
  • Some experience working in research, marketing, or a related industry
  • Proven critical thinking and numeracy skills
  • Positive, ‘can do’ attitude, willing to come forward with ideas and suggestions for improvement
  • Is proactive & puts oneself forward - looking for ways to help the team
  • Co-operative/good communicating skills; a good listener
  • The ability to communicate with different types of people, at all levels
  • Creative, innovative and analytical
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage several tasks simultaneously and respond quickly to changing priorities
  • Good organizational skills and ability to organize others
