Dept Marketing Statement
Launched in 2014 as an undergraduate program, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES) reached departmental status in 2021. CRES offers a study of the dynamic power relations resulting from the cultural and institutional productions of the idea of "race" on a local, national, and global scale. At the undergraduate level, the department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in CRES, a minor in Black Studies, and a 4+1 Masters and credential pathway with Education. The department offers a Designated Emphasis at the graduate level. CRES is the fastest-growing major within the Humanities and currently serves over 130 students. Faculty from across the campus have contributed significantly to conversations in critical race and ethnic studies for decades, with nationally renowned faculty from Anthropology; Education; Feminist Studies; Film and Digital Media; History; History of Art and Visual Culture; History of Consciousness; Latin American and Latino Studies; Linguistics; Literature; Music; Performance, Play, and Design; Politics; Psychology; and Sociology contributing to the curriculum.

The CRES Department is the site of dynamic research initiatives. CRES houses the Critical Ethnic Studies Journal, the flagship journal in the field. CRES also administers the Center for Racial Justice (CRJ), which was established in 2019 and serves as a vital hub for dialogue and research on race and racial justice, The CRJ offers events and conferences (including a Summer Institute), political education, and funding opportunities for students invested in racial justice.

Position Summary

Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice on academic policies and procedures for an academic department / college / school, including major and minor requirements, and all aspects of course requirements for degree or program completion. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

Under the direction of the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Department Manager, the Undergraduate Advisor and Department Administrator provides academic advising for the Bachelor of Arts and minor(s) in the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES) department. Supports the CRES office, which in turn supports the above-mentioned department, in the areas of general administration and undergraduate program support. Works closely with and under the supervision of the Center for Racial Justice (CRJ) director/co-directors to provide administrative support to the center.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary Information: $23.95 - $28.74/Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
60% - Academic Advising

Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements for the department. Assists students in determining a major, alternative academic options, scheduling conflicts, and similar issues. Monitors and evaluates students' completion of academic requirements. Applies articulated courses to program / degree requirements and certifies degree completion. Advises on moderately complex issues such as multiple degrees, or withdrawal from the University.

Assists with and participates in student orientations, co-curricular programming, and the senior celebration.

Identifies student needs for programs and services. Refers students to non-academic resources as appropriate.

Provides information to students on programs with special, clearly articulated eligibility requirements such as honors programs, awards, fellowships, scholarships, and advanced level courses.

Advises department on scheduling needs for student course progression and requirements completion. Communicates and exchanges information with other units of the organization and makes referrals to help students with their academic program (e.g., health service, disabled students program, Colleges, transfer center, academic departments, graduate division)

30% - Center for Racial Justice

Oversees event logistics for the center, including guest relations, meal arrangements, travel planing and associated financial transactions for events and other activities for CJR.

Promotes events across multiple platforms, including the website.

Arranges, attends and supports planning meetings, including Steering Committee meetings. Serves as a liaison for CRES and CRJ. May attend faculty meetings to report on CRJ activities to the CRES staff and faculty.

May supervise student employees. Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates performance. Assigns duties, establishes priorities, and manages workflow.

10% - Administrative Support

Provides administrative support to the Department Chair, Manager, and Assistant Manager.

Plans and executes events (ex. receptions, colloquia, alumni outreach) within budget limits and oversees associated financial transactions.

Oversees department communications, records, equipment and inventory.

Maintains websites.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original idea to solve problems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
Ability to multi-task.
Cultural competency and sensitivity to work with diverse stakeholders.
Professional demeanor and discretion with sensitive and confidential matters.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to work collaboratively under supervision as well as independently.
Experience in a computerized environment, including demonstrated ability to work with databases, spreadsheets, and systems.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of departmental courses and majors.
Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and requirements.
Knowledge of FERPA and related student service policies.
