Harris & Associates is looking for 2 On-Call Archaeologists

The Sr. On-Call Archaeologist is responsible for conducting cultural resources field work and analysis, and preparation of technical documentation including California Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) forms, California Historical Resources Information System (CHRIS) background checks, Sacred Lands file checks, and reports. This individual must have experience in field surveys and monitoring, preparation of DPR forms and reports in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The ideal candidate will meet the Secretary of the Interior's (SOI) Standards for Archaeology. This is an on-call position with work assigned as needed. Work will primarily consist of field work and analysis and preparation of technical documentation and reports.

The Jr. On-Call Archaeologist is responsible for cultural resources field monitoring and assisting Harris' Sr. Archaeologists with their duties.

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Apply cultural resources expertise to environmental analyses, surveys, and monitoring
  • Conduct or assist with archival and record searches for project compliance and coordinate Native American consultations in compliance with Senate Bill 18 and Assembly Bill 52, when necessary
  • Lead or be part of teams conducting field work including pre-construction meetings, pedestrian surveys, limited shovel test pits, and cultural monitoring
  • Lead or assist in the preparation of technical reports including cultural resources studies, constraints studies, reports, Sacred Land File checks, CHRIS background checks, and documentation consistent with regulatory requirements
  • Develop and or assist with mitigation strategies for projects in coordination with the client, lead agency, and regulatory agencies

Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in anthropology/archaeology, environmental studies, environmental sciences, or related field. An advanced degree (Masters) in any of these areas may be substituted for one year of work experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience for Sr, Archaeologist
  • Minimum of 1 year experience for Junior Archaeologist positions that includes constraints analysis, project surveys, monitoring, and the preparation of DPR forms, Sacred Lands file checks, CHRIS background checks, documentation and reports
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and conduct constraints analyses, project surveys, and monitoring
  • Strong relationships with key clients and agency staff
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong oral and written communication/interpersonal skills
  • Strong research, mathematical/scientific and analytical skills
  • Ability to multi-task and change priorities quickly
  • The position may require infrequent travel
