Position Announcement
The University of Oregon, situated on the traditional homelands and political territories of the Kalapuya people, is supporting four hires in Native American and Indigenous Studies to begin Fall 2022. One of these positions, a 1.0 FTE tenure-track position in archaeology at the Assistant Professor level, will reside in the Anthropology Department. We seek an anthropological archaeologist with a focus on Western North America and preference for a candidate with a record of effective, culturally competent collaboration with Native American tribal nations and a demonstrated experience or ability and interest in teaching department offerings in cultural resource management. The successful candidate is expected to conduct a rigorous, fieldwork and/or laboratory based, externally-funded research program as well as teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

We particularly invite applications from candidates whose background, teaching, and scholarship demonstrate a focus on diversifying the discipline to include a highly collaborative approach with cultural and tribal communities; who will prepare our students for a culturally-aware approach to their practice of archaeology that can address historical inequities or biases in the discipline; and who have contributed or have a potential to contribute to diversifying our field by training the next generation of diverse-background students. We also welcome applications from scholars who are from populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or who have experience working with diverse populations.

Department or Program Summary
The Anthropology Department at the University of Oregon is a diverse and growing department with strengths in Biological Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology. Interdisciplinary ties are one of our strengths, and thus many faculty members are closely aligned with other programs and units such as the Native American and Indigenous Studies program; the Museum of Natural and Cultural History; the Center for the Study of Women in Society; the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies; the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies; the Institute of Ecology and Evolution; Ethnic Studies; and Women’s and Gender Studies. The Anthropology Department at the University of Oregon offers a major, minor and PhD degree; teaching load is five courses per year within a quarter system.


The Department of Anthropology is dedicated to better understanding human cultural and biological origins and diversity through education and research. The faculty is committed to excellence in teaching and to the advancement of knowledge through local, national, and international programs of research. As anthropologists, we are engaged in understanding recent and historical developments in the world at large, and we also seek to bring anthropological perspectives to bear on the problems of a modern global society. The department embraces a broad intellectual pluralism where different theoretical and methodological approaches are recognized and valued.
