Jigsaw (https://jigsaw.google.com/vision/) is focused on helping users confront threats in the face of conflict, instability, or repression. While today such users represent a fraction of the Internet community, in the future they will comprise the majority of Internet users. One of our stated goals is to try and end online repressive censorship within a decade, using initiatives like Project Shield (https://jigsaw.google.com/products/project-shield/) , a service to protect at-risk websites from attacks that threaten free expression.
Jigsaw is a unit within Google that explores threats to open societies, and builds technology that inspires scalable solutions. Jigsaw teams focus on five primary threats: censorship, disinformation, hate, harassment, and violent extremism. We forecast emerging threats online, build technology to protect people, and enable those on the front lines to take action. Jigsaw's Research and Development team uses an array of research methodologies, from ethnographic studies, behavioral psychology experiments, and ML models, to forecast emerging threats and demonstrate the potential of interventions.
