Assistant Professor of Anthropology

The Colorado College Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the field of sociocultural anthropology with expertise in medical anthropology and/or environmental anthropology to begin in the fall of 2022. Secondary areas of interest include critical race studies and community-based learning. Geographical region of expertise is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates who can take advantage of field opportunities in the local region. We are committed to hiring someone in this position who will join and strengthen our department’s and college’s commitment to antiracism. This tenure-track hire would be expected to teach both introductory and upper-level courses in sociocultural anthropology that contribute to our sociocultural anthropology course offerings for the major and minor as well as to the college’s General Education requirements. This hire would also share departmental faculty’s responsibility in regularly teaching methods courses appropriate to their subdiscipline and the department’s core requirements for the major. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in anthropology by the time of appointment and provide evidence of excellence in teaching and of active scholarship. We seek a broadly educated anthropologist who shares our commitment to the goals of a four-field undergraduate anthropology program. Teaching and research interests should complement those of departmental faculty and take advantage of opportunities afforded by our college’s Block Plan schedule, in which professors teach, and students take, one course at a time, and which is uniquely suited to focused and intensive learning experiences. Our department offers courses contributing to a number of interdisciplinary major and minor programs including Race, Ethnicity and Migration Studies; Feminist and Gender Studies; Environmental Studies; Southwest Studies; Latin American Studies; Indigenous Studies; Africana Studies; Global Health; Nonviolence; and Linguistics. Applicants should specify how they might contribute to such interdisciplinary programs at the college.

Company

Our department offers an expansive outlook on human cultures, providing multiple opportunities for hands-on anthropological fieldwork, including field-based courses and lengthy field trips. The block system promotes creative teaching and rigorous expectations for reading, writing, and critical qualitative and quantitative analysis in anthropology. All four sub-fields of American anthropology are represented in our department: archaeology, which focuses on the material cultures and peoples of the past; biological anthropology, which concentrates on the relationships between culture and biology in the lives of humans and our evolutionary relatives; linguistic anthropology, which addresses both the formal complexity of linguistic systems and the role they play in regulating and negotiating social life; and sociocultural anthropology, which concentrates on contemporary peoples and their values, practices and organization.
