What We're Looking For
HNTB is currently seeking an Historian with a degree in History, Historic Preservation, Heritage Preservation, or a closely related field - Master's degree preferred. The Historian will be part of a growing team of cultural resource professionals in the HNTB Atlanta office and will apply a sound knowledge of the principles and theories of architectural history to analyze the potential effects projects may have on cultural resources. The Historian may be responsible for completing simple to moderate projects and for assisting on complex projects.
Performs all aspects of architectural historian assignments, including research, data analysis, survey, reporting, assessment of effects, and other related documentation. Will work with other environmental specialists and design engineers to complete environmental compliance for transportation projects.
Primary Focus Will Include:
  • Performs historic resources surveys and associated fieldwork
  • Conducts research and detailed analysis of data
  • Prepares technical reports
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
  • Master's Degree in History, Historic Preservation, Heritage Preservation, Planning or related field
  • 1-2 years of related experience
  • Meets Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Architectural Historian
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Familiarity with NEPA, NHPA, Section 106, and other state environmental compliance laws
  • Able to maintain effective working relationships with HNTB, clients and agency staff
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with ArcGIS preferred

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Prepares written reports, maps and statements of geologic, hydrologic, biologic and/or other scientific findings at project site as it relates to the planning, design and construction of projects.
  • Collects project related data which may include research, interviews with government agencies and clients, map reviews, field investigations, land use, etc., prepare graphics and exhibits.
  • Determines data collection methods to be used in research projects and surveys.
  • Sets up test equipment at proposed project site to obtain scientific data.
  • Maintains records, collections and files related to specific projects.
  • Keeps current with trends, literature and new developments in ecology and environmental science.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field
  • 2 years related experience
  • No experience (with Master's degree in Natural Sciences)
