Social Scientist, Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology

Minimum qualifications:
- PhD degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, Education, Human Computer Interaction, Informatics, Science and Technology studies in a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience working in critical race theory, gender, decolonial theory; labor, accessibility, human rights, cross-cultural analysis, science and technology, policy and law pertaining to discrimination, or technology evaluation and governance.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience working with multiple research methodologies, including both qualitative (ethnographic, archival, interview-based) and quantitative (survey-based, statistical, computational) methods.
- Demonstrated research excellence through some combination of publications in leading journals, presentations at interdisciplinary conferences, awards and honors, tech policy analysis and/or development, and excellent endorsements from peers in academia, industry, non-profits or government.
- Research focused on critical aspects of sociotechnical systems, or equivalent practical experience in industry or policy research space.
- Experience in analyzing multiple modalities of data.
- Ability to design and execute on research agenda.
- Excellent prioritization/multitasking capabilities and communication skills across teams.
The Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology organization aims to shape the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning in a way that's informed by long-term social and environmental impacts. Our team is interdisciplinary, with projects that span both foundational and applied research, incorporating disciplinary perspectives ranging from computer science, mathematical theory, and data science to education, anthropology, and the history of technology, to applied work in computer vision and natural language processing. We work globally and cross-functionally with engineers, user experience, machine learning researchers, product managers, and program managers. Alongside our contributions to broader research communities, we work within the broader Google organization to develop ethical processes and product advancements.
As a Social Scientist in the Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology organization, you'll be part of a team that's pushing the boundaries on our understanding of sociotechnical systems. Teammates come from diverse backgrounds with passion for doing what's right, working collaboratively to make decisions based on foresight and potential long-term outcomes.
You are an interdisciplinary scholar, who incorporates intersectional, feminist, racial, and cultural analysis to research the relationship between technology and society. Research may focus on how artificial intelligence shapes the social world, including personal identification, collective action, assistance, social inequality, social justice, algorithmic discrimination, surveillance, or other aspects of the social relations of power and technology.

- Investigate and identify critical ethical issues where artificial intelligence meets society.
- Identify product vulnerabilities, and recommend detection/prevention strategy adjustments based on trends and patterns.
- Innovate and assist in implementing large-scale quality improvements to processes and/or systems by making recommendations, troubleshooting potential social issues.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
