Job Summary:

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Eastern Washington University invites applications for one full-time Lecturer position in English as a Second Language in the Department of History, Anthropology, and Modern Languages and Literatures to begin September 2021. This position is a one-year appointment for AY2021-2022 with the option for renewal based on funding availability and department need.

We seek an outstanding educator with successful experience teaching English language learners at a variety of proficiency levels, in a variety of contexts including academic, basic communicative, and specific purposes, and from a variety of literacy backgrounds. Demonstrated success with using technology for online teaching required. Demonstrated interest in supporting professional development of teachers and demonstrated cultural responsiveness with students from Japan highly desired. Responsibilities will include instructing courses and advising students in English as a Second Language teacher education, teaching intensive English courses, creating co-curricular activities, and designing language learning experiences through coursework, individual instruction, and self-directed learning. Faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

The candidate selected for these positions may be expected to teach face-to-face classes, hybrid or blended classes and/or online classes according to the needs of the department.

Additionally, the candidate selected for these positions will be expected to offer interest and/or experience in online learning and pursuit of grants, to expand the university's endeavors in those areas.

Required Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in TESOL or a related field.

• Demonstrated ability to successfully use technologies to teach online.

• Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who offer one or more of the following preferred qualifications:

• Diverse experiences teaching and creating curriculum and co-curricular activities for second language learners.

• Previous experience teaching students from Japan.

• Previous experience designing a range of language learning experiences including coursework, individual instruction, and self-directed learning.

Job Duties:

% of Time: 100

Responsibility / Duty: Teaching: typical workload for this position will involve 45 credits per academic year and the candidate may be required to teach other courses that fulfill the need of the Department and Program according to the expertise of the candidate hired into the position.

Teaching includes the following additional related responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA :

• Meet all scheduled classes

• Plan, organize and inform students of the course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance regulations and methods of evaluation including grading scales

• Schedule and attend office hours

• Turn in grades according to established deadlines

Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

Conditions of Employment:

The candidate hired into this position will receive a one-year appointment for AY2021-2022 with the option for renewal based on funding availability and department need.

The required start date for this position is 09/16/2021. To be considered eligible for appointment into the position, applicants must be available and able to start in the position no later than 09/16/2021.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

Salary Information: The expected salary upon hire is $51,333.
