The Department of African and Black Diaspora Studies at DePaul University invites applicants for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 2022.


We seek applicants whose PhD and/or work fits into the humanistic social sciences, including (but not limited to) Black/African Diaspora Studies, Critical Ethnic Studies, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Geography, and related areas of study. Ideally, candidates’ record of teaching and research will demonstrate facility with interdisciplinary approaches to the historical and contemporary Black/African Diaspora.

For full consideration, candidates should submit the following materials: cover letter, current CV, research statement, recent writing sample of up to 30 pages, one sample syllabus for an undergraduate course. (The syllabus need not be from a previously taught course.) Candidates who move past the initial round of consideration may be asked to submit additional materials.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and actively participate in the development of the Department of African and Black Diaspora Studies, including recruiting and advising students. Candidates should have an active research agenda and should be prepared to teach core courses and higher-level electives. The candidate may also have the opportunity to teach students affiliated with the Critical Ethnic Studies M.A. Program and through the University’s Liberal Studies Program.

This tenure-track appointment is only in the Department of African and Black Diaspora Studies. Housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, African and Black Diaspora Studies is an undergraduate department offering courses based in interdisciplinary approaches to the study of histories, cultures, and socio-political systems of peoples of African descent.

​African and Black Diaspora Studies graduates have gone on to pursue employment and graduate work (Masters and Doctoral) in a variety of areas including: Media and Cultural Analysis, African American and Africana Studies, International Studies, Critical Ethnic Studies, Social Work, Higher Education administration, Law, Racial and Social Justice organizations, among other fields.​​
