American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, provides professional development opportunities for young adults seeking to enhance their career experience. ACE's Emerging Professionals in Conservation (EPIC) program has a national reputation for providing young adults and recent graduates with hands-on, professional development individual placement opportunities to work alongside and under the guidance of agency mentors as they apply their knowledge of resource management on their path to becoming the next generation of resource and land managers. The ACE EPIC Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) hosts over a hundred members in individual placement projects each year in Wildlife Refuges sites located across the country. Individual placement projects supported are diverse and range from invasive species control; riparian and wetland restoration; recreation and trail maintenance; wildlife monitoring; facilities maintenance; fisheries and hydrology management; ecology; landscape level planning; timber; outreach and visitor services; and other FWS program priorities.

Position Title: National Visitor Survey Logistics Coordinator

Location: This position will be based out of the FWS Natural Resource Program Center in Fort Collins, CO (remote work from the Denver area may be possible)

Department/Division: EPIC, US Fish and Wildlife Service

Status: Temporary, Full-Time, Exempt

Schedule/Hours: 40 hours/week, flexible Schedule with varying shifts (Monday- Friday); Some evening and weekend hours may be occasionally required.

Compensation: Full-Time, 40 hours/week receiving a bi-weekly compensation of $1600.00 ($41,600.00 annualized salary. Additionally, ACE offers a competitive benefits package that includes health, dental, vision and supplemental insurance, paid vacation, sick leave, designated holidays, and 401k retirement for qualified employees.

Housing for this position is the responsibility of the employee (ACE and FWS staff will assist in providing local knowledge if needed)

Start Date: August/September 2021

End Date: Approximately 52 weeks from the start date (possibly longer based on performance and project needs)

Program Overview:

The mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System (Refuge System) of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is to administer a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management, and where appropriate, restoration of the fish, wildlife, and plant resources and their habitats within the United States for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans. More than 560 national wildlife refuges exist across the country, with at least one in every U.S. state and territory, and they receive more than 50 million visits annually. Understanding and characterizing visitors and their experiences on refuges is a critical element of managing Refuge System lands and waters.

The National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Survey effort is led by the Service's Human Dimensions (HD) Branch, and provides the FWS with information regarding visitors' recreational, educational, and informational experiences, as well as visitors' levels of satisfaction with current services and facilities. Ultimately, the collection of information from refuge visitors helps the Service to track and understand how some of the complex changes occurring within American society (e.g., demographic changes, stakeholder preferences) are likely to affect the future of the Refuge System. Surveying visitors at refuges that have at least 50,000 visits began in 2018 on a rotating basis, with approximately 35 refuges surveyed each year. Position Summary:

In support of the FWS, the ACE National Visitor Survey Logistics Coordinator will provide logistical support in the implementation of a multi-year nationwide survey of visitors to national wildlife refuges. Specific work will entail communication, logistical planning, and project and team coordination to develop sampling schedules that ensure an adequate sample of completed questionnaires to generalize the results to the population of visitors for each refuge.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Mentor and lead ACE intern teams traveling across the country collecting visitor data at National Wildlife Refuges
  • Serve as a liaison between ACE, the FWS project manager, participating refuges, and field teams.
  • Consult with Refuge staff to identify sampling dates and locations for onsite visitor sampling.
  • Develop sampling schedules based on consultation with Refuge staff.
  • Participate in pre-sampling visitor recruitment training.
  • Conduct check-in calls with field teams to discuss and troubleshoot any challenges or barriers to contacting or recruiting visitors for the visitor survey.
  • Travel to Refuges to conduct visitor sampling as needed (pending travel funding).
  • Track program implementation, recognize potential conflicts, and identify solutions to logistical challenges.
  • Develop general and refuge specific cross-training opportunities for National Visitor Survey (NVS) field teams.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience and Qualifications:
  • Applicants must have completed a BA/BS degree in social/cultural/environmental science, planning, anthropology, natural resource management, parks, tourism and recreation, ecology or other related disciplines appropriate to the position. Master's Degree candidates, and individuals interested in enhancing their complex leadership skills are encouraged to apply.
  • Past team leadership experience and project management qualities are critical to assure success for this program
  • Experience with similar corps-oriented, non-profit organizations, land-based federal agencies such as the Department of Interior or other federal or state agencies is preferred
  • Must maintain a positive, constructive, and flexible work environment conducive to team dynamics
  • Strong skills in interpersonal communication, organization, management, conflict resolution and motivating others
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills with the ability to maintain and effectively support a complex array of projects
  • Computer skills required including intermediate knowledge of Excel and Google Suites, and professional email etiquette; Strong data management skills preferred.
  • Ability to function as an efficient, effective and adaptable team member displaying professional-level proficiencies in both technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to receive and provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand and follow ACE systems and processes.
  • Proven ability to work independently and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • Ability and willingness to represent ACE and FWS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Knowledge of survey sampling techniques and methods
  • Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the FWS and other federal land management agencies is preferred
  • Strong desire to enter the public service field as a natural/cultural/social resource professional

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record
  • Proficient in English
  • Ability to pass a federal criminal background check

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions
  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talks and hears. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard/mouse and other routine office equipment. May occasionally be required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs., occasionally lifts up to 25 pounds.
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions.
  • Travel: This position requires domestic travel.
