* Business Unit Description *
* Summary *

The Internal DEI Programs functional area champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive working environment and in collaboration with the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) leads the development of a vision and effective strategy to create a culture for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Sr. Advisor, Internal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs assists and supports the Director, Internal DEI Programs in the development and implementation of internal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in support of AARP's strategic plan to create an inclusive working environment where all have an opportunity to succeed. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Internal DEI Programs.

This role provides programmatic support to enhance behaviors, attitudes, and policies that support diversity, equity, and inclusion, assists with managing enterprise strategies to assess potential barriers and maintain and leverage a diverse workforce, and will coordinate with enterprise workgroups to assess the need for initiatives on cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, and other topics designed to increase awareness and support of diversity, equity and inclusion values.
* Responsibilities *

* Provide staff support to the Business Unit Commitment Process. Providing Business Unit leaders the support they need to create, implement, and monitor programs designed to move the diversity, equity and inclusion strategic framework forward.
* Support the creation and coordination of internal DEI programs and initiatives within the internal DEI functional area.
* Build communications vehicles to tell the story of DEI impact.
* Support the deployment and communication of strategic guidance for initiatives and programs on cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, building a climate of diversity, equity and inclusion, and other topics designed to increase awareness and cultivate a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion values.
* Supports the AARP Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council; providing team meeting updates, building presentations, organizing speakers, and developing communication tools to quantifiably and qualifiedly express the impact of the Council's efforts on the enterprise.
* Supports and staffs the Strategic Engagement Employee Resource Groups (SEERG). Managing quarterly SEERG leadership meetings and SEERG programming that promotes a working environment and culture committed to a climate of equity, diversity, and inclusion for all staff and volunteers.
* Collaborates with internal stakeholders to promote and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
* Requirements *

* 5+ years of experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex organization.
* Bachelor's degree in education, sociology, social anthropology, public administration, human resource management or any other related field required.
* Experience performing the duties described above may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.


* Expertise in planning, implementing, improving, and evaluating diversity programs
* Displays a proficiency in strategy development
* Possess understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion best practices
* Collaboration and consensus building skills are a must
* Excellent ability to write, communicate and share project updates to the executive level
* Ability managing change; and confidential and sensitive topics
* Demonstrated experience analyzing and developing policies and procedures
* Ability to understand, be sensitive to, and respect the diverse socio-economic, ethnic, religious, cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of employees across AARP
* Ability to maintain a professional demeanor during emotionally charged, difficult, or high-pressure situations


* Work pressure, disturbances of workflow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are frequent and require significant adaptation.
* The work environment rapidly evolves, requiring continual upgrading of skills.
* Work is mostly sedentary and confined to an office setting with occasional outside activity for training and intervention.
