Department Information

We are seeking a collaborative, hardworking person to assist the Autonomous Robotics Teaching Laboratory, which is part the Cognitive Science Program at Indiana University.

Established in 1989, the Program in Cognitive Science in the College of Arts and Sciences (The College) at Indiana University brings together faculty and students from many departments to study cognition and information. We celebrated our 30th anniversary in 2020.

At present, the Program of Cognitive Science is comprised of 70 core faculty members, and 78 associated faculty participate in the program. Representation is strong from the departments of psychology, philosophy, computer science, and linguistics. Other participating departments include biology, anthropology, education, library and information science, optometry, speech and hearing, and mathematics.

Job Summary

Under the direction of faculty supervisor, this role is responsible for developing research/instructional software and web applications for the Cognitive Science Robotics Teaching Laboratory and faculty that are working on robotics-related teaching and research. This includes designing, programming, and testing. The individual in this role will research, install, administer, maintain, and provide support for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux workstations and peripherals, as well as install and support software.

More specifically, duties of this role include but are not limited to the following:
  • Set up, maintain, repair and manage the inventory of all equipment in the lab (including computers but especially the robot kits).
  • Prepare specific additional materials for each project that the students do (for example, setting up and changing mazes for a mid-semester robot maze-running competition).
  • Work with students to resolve any technical issues (both hardware and software) that arise as they work on their projects, including helping students to debug their code.
  • Keep the lab open from 9am - 5pm weekdays so that students can come and go to work on their robots as their schedules permit, and provide expert assistance to the students during this time.
  • Provide instruction on equipment use.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years of software development or related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree preferably in computer science, business systems, or related field. Programming fluency in C/C++ and/or Python. Some experience with using and programming robots preferred. Positive customer service attitude, excellent problem-solving skills, and strong communications skills. Able to work both independently and as an integral member of a team. Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure. Highly thorough and dependable.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Approximately $46,675.20 - $57,771 annually.
