Area Studies Regional Chair - Arlington, VA

Background:

Kent, Campa and Kate Incorporated (KCK) is a federal contracting company that provides professional services to Government Agencies. We are currently seeking candidates for an Area Studies Regional Chair position in Arlington, VA.

Position Description:

The position will be located in the Area Studies Division in the School of Professional and Area Studies at the Foreign Services Institute (FSI). The Area Studies Regional Planner will serve as the coordinator and trainer of a regional area studies program with responsibility for all specified regional country-specific, and thematic training and guidance for the Department of State.

Requirements:
  • Minimum Experience: Professional and expert-level knowledge which is pertinent to a number of disciplines in various fields of the social sciences and applied to at least one particular region of the world.
  • Minimum Education: Professional education and experience in any or a combination of the following disciplines: Foreign Affairs; International Relations; History; Anthropology; Sociology; and related social science disciplines. A completed PhD is preferred but advanced graduate course work is also acceptable.
  • Knowledge and skills in the development of curricula and courses.
  • Advanced skills in adult education, ideally involving the subject matter for which the position is responsible.
  • Knowledge and skills in training evaluation sufficient to be able to evaluate the results of the courses.
  • Advanced knowledge of the mission and functions of the Department of State, and particularly the relevant regional bureau, as well as other foreign affairs agencies.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to carry out management and administrative functions.
  • Familiarity with and the ability to use computer and related technologies and excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to teach and guide students outside of disciplinary specialization.
  • Commitment to collective and collaborative work environment.
  • Program management experience.

Working Duties (including but not limited to):
  • Plan long and short range curriculum for a regional program.
  • Respond to requests for unscheduled or customized courses.
  • Identify speakers and pedagogical materials and resources for the program.
  • Maintain regional expertise and visibility necessary to lead the regional program and serve as FSI's regional expert.
  • Teach courses within areas of expertise.
  • Develop curriculum for all courses within the program.
  • Continuously research to keep materials and course content updated and cutting edge.
  • Continuously develop and maintain professional contacts who will be resources for the courses.
  • Serve as FSI's expert on the region.
  • As the regional expert, produce Ambassadorial Briefing Books as required.
  • Maintain and develop professional contacts with other government agencies and provide training and consultation to those agencies in accordance with FSI policies.
  • Develop and maintain course evaluation instruments according to FSI policy.
  • Analyze evaluation data.
  • Conduct needs assessments and utilize evaluation data to design offerings in the regional program.
