Purposes

Assist the Europe/Africa Team in the Archives and Area Support Division (GS&A) of the Church History Department in collecting, preserving, and sharing Church history throughout our assigned areas. This is an exciting and unique opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in history or library/archival science. We are looking for a motivated, energetic, and organized individual to join our team!

This paid internship is anticipated to last one year (12 months). This position is a part-time (28 hours per week) hourly, nonexempt position. The candidate must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from (within the last 12 months), an undergraduate- or graduate-degree program. Preference will be given to history/MLIS students, or those who are English majors working on an editing certificate

Responsibilities

Intern will learn and be exposed to:
  • Archives research, acquisition of records, and processing records (workflow management) - with heavy emphasis on records processing techniques that align with Church History Department standards
  • The Church History Department's worldwide documentation program

The Assistant will be responsible to fulfill the following tasks:
  • Provide assistance to the full-time team members - research, errands, etc.
  • Edit materials received from Church History Advisers from Europe and Africa
  • Quality-check and provide feedback on oral histories
  • Assist staff in training and managing missionaries at headquarters and abroad
  • Assist in the acquisition process as needed

Intern will work under the direction of Church archivists and historians and will receive training and/or day-to-day direction from them.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree (or senior looking to graduate within 6 months) in history, international studies, anthropology, religious studies, or a related field preferred
  • Self-motivated and dependable
  • Excellent English and editorial skills
  • French, German, Spanish, or Central or Eastern European language skills, both written and verbal, preferred
  • Leadership and training experience
  • High degree of organizational skills, including scheduling and managing multiple projects
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, particularly Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Experience with historical research methods, oral histories, and a strong interest in global Mormonism preferred
  • Familiarity with European and/or African cultures helpful
  • Available to work 28 hours per week. There is flexibility in specific scheduling (especially if you are attending school), but work must be accomplished between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Paid Interns are qualified while enrolled in an educational institution and for one year following graduation. They must sign a Paid Internship Engagement Letter.

Worthiness Qualification

Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple worthy.
