Job Summary
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine is seeking a faculty candidate with the ability to provide instruction in the area of social sciences, social justice and equity (specific to medical education and related areas) and with experience in service learning and/or community engagement with experience partnering with local and state community focused agencies. Health and social inequalities are observed at the individual, relationship/network, community/neighborhood, societal levels, and structural level and are embedded in life course dynamics. A successful candidate will have educational and/or programming expertise in the social, cultural, and structural determinants and/or manifestations of neighborhood inequality at any of these levels. Topics of expertise could include, but are not limited to, disparities in health, income, transportation, or residence relating to race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, abilities, religion, or other characteristics. Applicants with training across disciplines such as medical education, interdisciplinary studies, public health, psychology, demography, sociology, political science, medical anthropology, philosophy with concentration on applied healthcare ethics are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have a strong interest in working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary group of medical educators, behavioral health specialists, clinicians, and curriculum scholars to build out courses in biomedical and clinical sciences that include meaningful exploration of social justice and health equity. Successful candidates should be willing to continuously learn about the current theories and research in health disparity and health equity including, but not limited to, behavioral health, minority health, health equity, trauma exposure, violence, biopsychosocial behaviors in prevention and treatment, chronic disease management and health outcomes, and evaluation of health policy and delivery system initiatives. This is a faculty position in the Department of Medical Education. The position will work collaboratively with the Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer for specific duties related to social justice and equity.
Job Duties
- Serve as core or contributing faculty member for the relevant courses in MD. Serve as contributing faculty member for curricular threads, particularly social justice and equity.
- Available for podcasts and evidence based pedagogical activities (active learning/flipped classroom) contributing to social sciences, social justice and service-learning instruction in the MD or MBS program.
- Provide feedback on class activities and reflection exercises as appropriate to MD learners.
- Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, trainings, workshops, current literature, and professional affiliations regarding trends and practices in teaching clinical skills and communication .
- Coordinate activities with Associate and/or Assistant Dean for Equity and Inclusion in relation to equity and inclusion activities.
- Participate in student interviews and recruitment activities.
- Attend required meetings and trainings.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Chair of Medical Education Department (DME) and/or Vice Chair(s) of Medical Education Department (DME)

Position Details
- A doctoral or equivalent degree in public health, sociology, demography, education, sociology, medical anthropology, philosophy, ethics of social justice, health policy or another equivalent degree are desired.
- A doctoral degree or equivalent degree in medicine, nursing, psychology will be considered with the added qualifications to demonstrate expertise outside of the primary health professional degree.
- A strong theoretical grounding, knowledge of current trends and knowledge of today's leaders in health care social justice and health equity is valued
- Experience in incorporating community partnerships and stakeholder engagement processes in the educational program is valued.
- Ability to assist science and clinical educators to adopt language related to the colleges' community health goals and health-related outcomes for the region is valued.
- Experience with or potential to create community-based participatory research and/or programming related to the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups is highly desirable.
- Evidence of scholarly activity and/or potential to develop future scholarly work is highly desirable.
