The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) is one of the largest academic units on the UW Seattle campus, employing over 1400 tenure-track and research faculty, in 43 departments and centers, and generating an average $120 million dollars in sponsored research each year. CAS is comprised of 4 major divisions - Arts, Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science - whose cutting-edge research spans from malaria treatment to solar energy to human rights. The UW Department of Anthropology within the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) has an outstanding opportunity for an Administrator.
The UW Department of Anthropology consists of three academic subdisciplines: archaeology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology. All three are, in their own way, striving to document and understand our many interconnected ways of being human in a world now inhabited by seven billion people speaking six thousand languages. If this mission piques your interest, we urge you to apply for the role of Administrator at the UW Department of Anthropology. In this role you will report to Chair of the Department and be responsible for managing the daily operations of a dynamic and economically focused department that includes 23 permanent faculty members, 3 full-time teaching faculty, 3-6 part-time teaching faculty, 6 staff members, nearly 700 undergraduate majors, and 43 graduate students. With general direction from the Department Chair, the Administrator acts independently and ensures that University policies and procedures are followed. Those responsibilities include general administration, business planning, financial management, personnel, facilities support, research project support, development, and other functions as necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Fiscal oversight, managing approximately $5.4 million annually in revenue; tracking and reconciling expenditures, verifying balances, creating and maintaining financial reports, and providing the Chair with fiscal forecasts. Ensure gifts are transmitted, acknowledged, and used in a timely fashion, estimate revenue from endowed funds, and provide guidance on allowable uses of all funds.
Manage Human Resources. Directly supervise three staff member and provide guidance to other staff supervisors regarding HR policies.
Responsible for all academic HR processes. Manage the processes around faculty appointment, promotion and tenure, and reappointments, preparing, assembling and distributing required documentation.
Oversee all the department space including offices, conference rooms, research and computer labs. Supervise regular equipment purchases, upgrades and repairs.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's Degree
• Six to eight years' experience at an educational institution in positions of increasing complexity and responsibility
• Demonstrated experience (management and forecasting) of annual funds in excess of $2 million
• Strong written, digital and oral communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and discretion
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED EXPERIENCE
• Experience in an R-1 academic institution
• Profiency in the Mac OS environment
• Proficiency in Excel
• Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills
• Ability to analyze large data sets
• Ability to work independently, professionally, and proactively with a high degree of reliability and accuracy
• Demonstrated collaborative work style and ability to work well in a diverse workplace
• Proven organization and multi-tasking skills in a fast-paced, demanding environment
• Experience with academic personnel (hires, appointment, re-appointment)
• Experience with UW systems, including Workday and MyFD
• Supervisory experience
• Experience managing facilities
• Experience using Microsoft Access
• Curiosity and imagination
