Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Specialist

The GBV Specialist will primarily support the USAID Collective Action to Reduce GBV (CARE-GBV) Activity. CARE-GBV aims to foster effective integration of GBV prevention and response frameworks and tools across the Agency's program portfolio through tasks that achieve broad uptake of actionable knowledge and learning and create vibrant knowledge networks for the GBV stakeholder community-all aimed at strengthening USAID's GBV programming.

The GBV Specialist will work as part of a collaborative team providing technical input on developing and disseminating strategies and products related to CARE-GBV's five key objectives, which are to:

Develop and disseminate foundational elements for integrated and standalone GBV programming in development contexts.

Strengthen prevention and response programming on harmful GBV practices (specifically child, early, forced marriage and female genital mutilation/cutting) across different sectors through convening workshops, implementation plans, and learning agenda development.

Create knowledge products to strengthen GBV programming.

Strengthen the USAID GBV community of practice and donor coordination in GBV programming.

Apply ‘research to practice' through small grants to new, local, and under-utilized partners to build capacity and elevate the role of staff wellness and resiliency in promoting high-quality, sustainable GBV prevention and response programming; fill global data gaps related to GBV; and promote learning.

Principal Responsibilities include:

• Translating research and evidence into practice by providing input into products to share knowledge, build skills, and promote collective action for improved GBV programming by USAID staff and implementing partners
• Providing expertise to design and share information about good implementation practices in GBV across USAID programming for USAID staff and implementing partners

• Co-facilitating advisory group meetings that include USAID staff and global GBV experts contributing to project objectives and deliverables development
• Delivering technical assistance to recipients of CARE-GBV grants
• Presenting at meetings and learning events on products developed by CARE-GBV
• Writing reports, briefs, blogs, and other similar media
• Providing technical assistance on GBV and gender for various Making Cents' projects
• Supporting the growth of Making Cents' women's empowerment portfolio of projects which includes co-leading an internal working group and providing input on gender-focused new business activities
• Contributing to the development of online communities of practice that support the dissemination of GBV evidence in practice
• Supporting project monitoring, evaluation, learning and reporting activities as needed
• Supporting project collaborating, learning, and adapting activities, including supporting internal pause and reflect activities

Required Qualifications:

• Master's degree in relevant discipline (e.g., sociology, anthropology, international development, public administration, gender studies)
• Minimum of 5 years' experience working in international development contexts
• Demonstrated knowledge of current evidence and practice relating to GBV prevention and response; gender and social norms change; behavior change communication
• Strong desk research skills including conducting document reviews and remote key informant interviews
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to organize large amounts of information
• Strong knowledge of MS Office applications
• Strong English writing and oral presentation skills
• Ability to work in the US without sponsorship

Our ideal candidates have:

• Technical experience in addressing GBV, harmful gender norms, including child early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation/cutting; and with programming promoting wellness and resiliency within GBV programs
• Technical expertise in youth and/or economic growth programming
• Experience working with USAID
• Experience integrating GBV into sectors other than health
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, results-oriented approach
• Knowledge and understanding of unique cultural environments in which technical development projects operate and how they impact program design and delivery
• Proficiency in a language other than English, with a preference for French, Spanish, or Arabic
• Ability to work both in teams and independently
• Ability to take initiative, think critically, and deliver high-quality products

Working Conditions

Currently a remote position with anticipated move to regular office environment. Ability and willingness to travel and work abroad in less developed countries. Travel up to 10% may be required.
