POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chair reports to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and is responsible for the management and future direction of the Liberal Arts department.

The Department Chair is a faculty member, administrator, and leader. The successful candidate will be a dynamic leader with a strong record of accomplishment demonstrating high levels of scholarship, with in-depth knowledge of areas of contextual and critical studies relevant to art, craft and design. This may include: art and design history; critical theory; curation; material culture; media studies; philosophy, sociology, or anthropology; or creative entrepreneurship.

They will have a record of published works and the ability to advance the professional intellect of students in creative practice. They will be an experienced teacher and thought leader and be able to oversee and deliver an exceptional student learning experience.

Preferred candidates will present evidence of teaching excellence and demonstrate an interest in faculty development. They will be well equipped to address the fundamentals of a holistic liberal arts education and possess the ability to imagine and implement innovative curricula. They will have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, plus have the ability to advocate for the Liberal Arts department and work collaboratively with the other academic departments and College offices, such as Admissions and Marketing.

The ability to drive, plan, and implement innovative learning technologies, as well as online programming is essential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Chair of Liberal Arts will teach three classes per academic year. They are expected to contribute to the College's emerging research profile through published outputs, as well as faculty development and mentoring. They will be responsible for:
  • Managing the overall learning experience and leadership of the Liberal Arts program
  • Enhancing and further developing the liberal arts curriculum; keeping subject matter relevant and abreast of current critical debates and contextual themes
  • Developing complimentary minors and tracks
  • Driving curricula and pedagogic innovation for LMS usage and online programming
  • Liaising with BFA department chairs on the development of curricula content, and integration of theory and practice
  • Developing external relationships and partnerships with the city's cultural institutions
  • Liaising with partner colleges and outreach programs for recruitment and articulation
  • Developing foundational academic study skills
  • Developing personal and collaborative research projects and outputs for dissemination in the academic community
  • Hiring, managing, and mentoring Full time and Adjunct Instructors
  • Providing academic guidance
  • Mentoring of staff and faculty in scholarship and research
  • Participate in College-wide activities, including: commencement; Committees; faculty assembly; and reaccreditation
  • Participate in the annual Student Exhibition Opening and other externally facing events.

The successful candidate may need to be available for teaching some evenings and for occasional overnight and international travel. QUALIFICATIONS:

The program Chair will be an accomplished academic, teacher, and researcher. The candidate will have:
  • A doctoral degree
  • Teaching experience at the college level
  • Knowledge and expertise in an academic field(s) contextually and thematically relevant to art, craft, and design professional practices.
  • The ability to organize complex programing of classes across the College's undergraduate community
  • An established research profile, evidenced through publication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a team leader and colleague

Working knowledge of instructional design for online teaching and learning is desirable
