Stipend: $750/week (+Education Award)

Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps' Mission

It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well being. The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps is specifically designed to engage Native American youth and young adults with offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup, Zuni, and Hopi. *Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local tribal communities in the regions we operate. Applicants must be Native American.

USDA Forest Service Mission

Program Overview:

The Heritage (Archaeology) Program is one of the various departments that comprise the organization of the U.S. Forest Service. Other sections include Timber, Fire, Recreation, and Range. We adhere to the FS's mission of Multiple Use Natural Resource Management. Our job primarily consists of determining if a proposed activity, such as a Timber sale, a Prescribed Fire, or the installation of a water tank, will affect cultural resources. We conduct cultural resource surveys to ensure that cultural resources are not adversely impacted by the activity. We also document archaeological sites and record the data we collect in various databases.

The Individual Placements (IP) will perform archaeological surveys, site recording, learn data entry systems, and perform data entry. Work sites may vary, interns must be flexible and open mined. The IP's duties will be centered on the Jemez Ranger District, but may also perform work at the Cuba Ranger District or at the Supervisor's Office in Santa Fe, NM. The IP's will primarily work with professional archaeologists but will also interface with people from all departments within the Forest Service.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

The ALCC Santa Fe National Forest Archaeology Technician Individual Placement IP's will work to complete tasks and projects outlined below.

General Projects:

1) Data Entry
  • Work with staff to learn the Natural Resource Management (NRM) database.
  • Work with staff to learn the basics of Geographic Information System (GIS) .
  • Work with staff to learn records management.


2) Archaeological Survey
  • Work with professionals to learn the fundamentals of archaeological survey and professional ethics.
  • Learn map reading, compass, pacing, transect spacing, learn to use GPS units.
  • Learn to recognize cultural resources sites and artifacts.


3) Recording Archaeological Sites
  • Learning to recognize an archaeological site.
  • Assist in recording sites by learning site mapping, photo documentation, determining the boundary of the site, mapping the site, detailed recording keeping, and participating in flagging the site boundary.
  • Learn to fill out the New Mexico State Laboratory of Anthropology Site record form.


Required Skills

The ideal candidate for this position is a highly organized individual who has the ability to work individually and with a team. The ideal candidate will have networking skills, familiarity with basic computer programs and technology, data management skills or the ability to learn them.

Required Experience

An associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a related field, or a student in good standing in these disciplines at an accredited university.

The Forest Service recognizes that candidates may not possess all or many of the desired qualifications for this position, however, an individual who is enthusiastic, motivated, and demonstrates a willingness to challenge themselves by learning those skills in which they may be lacking at the time of hire will be welcomed.
