VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF SOCIO-CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY

Job Summary
The Department of Anthropology at Purdue University seeks applicants for a one academic year on-campus Visiting Assistant Professor position in socio-cultural anthropology beginning August 2021. Teaching load for this position is 4 in-person undergraduate courses per semester, with a possibility of including multiple sections of one or more of the courses. The signature focus of our department is Anthropologies of Tomorrow (http://www.cla.purdue.edu/anthropology). Teaching and research experience in any of the following areas is desirable:  socio-cultural anthropology, medical anthropology, applied anthropology, science and technology studies, racial and social justice, anti-racist and decolonizing approaches, gender and sexuality. We seek candidates who will engage students with broad interests and who are committed to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment in the classroom and department. In addition to teaching, we encourage the VAP to pursue their research and participate in the life of the department.

The successful applicant will teach 200 and 300 level undergraduate courses in our department with the possibility of teaching in the applicant’s areas of specialty including Human Cultural Diversity (large lecture with teaching assistants who lead recitations), Global Health, and possibility for other Anthropology courses such as Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective,Technology & Culture, or Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies.

Protect Purdue protocols include mandatory mask compliance, classroom protective measures, surveillance testing, and additional measures. A residential instruction model is anticipated for fall 2021.

Qualifications
 A Ph.D. in Anthropology is required at the time of appointment.  Postsecondary teaching experience in anthropology, or closely related field is strongly preferred.

Purdue University is a public, research intensive, PhD granting institution University, enrolling approximately 40,000 students per year. The West Lafayette campus is the main campus for Purdue, conveniently located on the Wabash River between Chicago and Indianapolis. Purdue's Department of Anthropology is located within The College of Liberal Arts and offers BA, MS and PhD degrees. The department collaborates with other programs including Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies, American Studies and African-American Studies within Liberal Arts and broader interdisciplinary centers and initiatives across campus including Discovery Park, The Center for the Environment, and the Center for Aging and the Life Course and the Purdue Policy Research Institute.
