The Department of Black Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications for the position of Head of the Department. We are seeking an innovative and dynamic leader with a distinguished record of scholarship in any area of African, African American Studies and/or African Diaspora studies broadly construed, and a commitment to interdisciplinary work. Black Studies (previously African American Studies) at UIC was founded in 1971 and has grown into a multidisciplinary department with 18 faculty and 5 faculty affiliates. Our faculty includes award-winning authors and scholars, nationally known policy analysts, and community activists engaged in pioneering work on race, racism, gender, sexuality, inequality, and the African Diaspora. The Department offers an undergraduate major and minor and an Interdisciplinary Graduate Concentration in Black Studies.  We maintain strong, interdisciplinary connections to scholarly and civic communities. These include, among others, the Humanities Institute, the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, the Latin American and Latino Studies Program, the Program in Gender and Women's Studies, the Program in Global Asian Studies, the Social Justice Initiative, and the Great Cities Institute. The Head is the chief administrative officer of the department with responsibility for instructional programs and for administrative, budgetary, promotion, and recruitment matters. The successful candidate will have a distinguished scholarship record commensurate with the rank of full professor, a strong teaching record, and appropriate academic administrative experience. PhD or equivalent degree required. The desired appointment date is August 16, 2021. Salary is competitive based on qualifications.
