Coastal Carolina University invites applications for the position of founding Dean of the Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences.  The University seeks an individual who has the ability to collaboratively lead a team of faculty and staff in developing a vision for this new academic unit and who will provide the direction and leadership needed to enhance the outstanding academic programs housed in the new college.  Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is administratively responsible for planning, organizing, budgeting, coordinating, directing and evaluating the instructional, research, scholarly, and service activities of the College. The Dean is also expected to take an active leadership role in recruiting and retaining faculty, staff, and students, and to represent the needs and interests of the College to the University and the greater community. It is anticipated that the new Dean will begin responsibilities July 1, 2021. 

Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, South Carolina, just nine miles from the Atlantic coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach. Coastal Carolina University enrolls over 10,000 students from 45 states and 58 nations. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the baccalaureate and selective master’s degrees of national and regional significance across a range of disciplines, a specialist degree in educational leadership and instructional technology, and Ph.D. degrees in Marine Science and Education.  The education programs at Coastal Carolina University were reaccredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) in spring 2020. All individual teacher preparation programs are nationally Specialized Professional Associations (SPA) or state recognized.

The Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences

This newly organized academic unit includes over 1000 students within undergraduate programs in anthropology and geography, early childhood education, elementary education, middle level education, physical education, political science, sociology, and special education.  The college also offers a number of graduate degree programs, including a Ph.D. in education, Ed.S. degrees in instructional technology and educational leadership, M.Ed. programs in educational leadership, instructional technology, special education, and language, literacy, and culture, and an M.A.T. in secondary education.  The new dean will also oversee a number of academic institutes and programs, including the Call Me MISTER Program, the Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program, the Edgar Dyer Institute for Leadership and Public Policy, the South Carolina Teaching Fellows program, the Teacher Cadet Program, and the LIFE Program.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated:

•             At least five years of progressive responsibility with achievements in administrative positions, including Department Chair, Center Director and/or Associate Dean, as well as experience with complex problem-solving, budgeting, personnel issues, program development, and fundraising;

•             Experience in successfully leading and implementing a collaborative visioning process for a new academic unit;

•             An understanding and appreciation of both education and the social sciences; ideally, the candidate’s experience or area of expertise will bridge education and the social sciences;

•             An ability to listen and communicate well, engage in effective conflict resolution, inspire and motivate others, and build collaborative teams;

•             A commitment to developing community within the college and an egalitarian approach to supporting the needs of each program within the college;

•             A commitment to support the ongoing professional development of faculty and staff colleagues;

•             Experience in and a commitment to building relationships between the College and the university’s service region via outreach, collaborative initiatives, and internships for students;

•             The ability to promote and advance the University's teacher-scholar faculty model in a student-centered environment, and the ability to advocate for and mediate the diverse aspirations and needs of faculty, staff, and students;

•             A proven ability to recruit and retain a diverse faculty and staff and to foster a community that values cultural, ethnic, and racial inclusivity, intercultural engagement, and an understanding of diversity with regard to sexuality and gender identity;

•             Experience in and commitment to developing innovative academic programs that advance and support the mission of the University, including new programs that will meet regional needs, including a global perspective;

•             Experience with master planning and the ability to effectively negotiate for the College’s diverse space needs;

•             Experience in and commitment to soliciting and increasing external gifts and fostering productive partnerships and connections between the College and the surrounding community, including cultural, social, educational, and economic development, as well as alumni and local/regional business partnerships;

•             An ability to represent comprehensively the College to internal and external constituencies;

•             Familiarity with assessment and accreditation processes and the ability to ensure institutional good standing with CAEP, with state protocols and policies, as well as disciplinary accreditors in education and the social sciences;

•             An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented in the College, along with a rigorous record of teaching, scholarly and/or creative accomplishments that will support appointment as a tenured full professor and overall leader of the College; and,

•             The ability to foster and manage positive change in a dynamic environment.
