Assistant Professor of Anthropology specialized in Health Sciences and Health Disparities
Wheaton College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Anthropology in Health Sciences and Health Disparities.
We are most interested in applicants whose area specializations are in the African continent or African Diasporas. Applicants focused on Black and Afro-Latinx populations in the US, as well as those with an active field research program that accommodates the inclusion of undergraduate students, are of particular interest.
A successful candidate will be eager to direct undergraduate students in fieldwork projects, community-based projects, and/or study-away programs and have a commitment to an engaged anthropology of the health sciences. Candidates should engage with critical questions in anthropology, including critical race theory, and be able to demonstrate the applied dimensions of their envisioned research and teaching programs.
Applicants should submit the following documents: a letter of interest, C.V., a one-page community- and civic-engaged teaching and learning statement that evidences and reflects on how the candidate’s scholarship and teaching practices engage with communities, and complete contact information for three references. The engaged teaching and learning statement should describe how the candidate’s teaching, scholarship, and mentoring would build a departmental and liberal arts college community that seeks to make a social justice impact.

A Ph.D. in Anthropology is required at the time of appointment. Position commences on July 1, 2021.

Wheaton College’s teaching load is 3-2. In addition to courses in the candidate’s areas of specialty, candidate will ideally be prepared to teach on Medical, Public and Global Health topics.
We seek scholars whose research interests include (in no specific order): African/American biomedicine; environmental racism; climate effects on health; political ecology of health, disease, and/or nutrition; health disparities; transnational aspects of illness and healthcare; perceptions of risk, vulnerability, and responsibility for illness and health care; and the embodiment of lived experience related to health and well-being.
