Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville SIUE is a growing and vibrant public university, recognized for its excellence in both undergraduate and graduate categories by U.S. News and World Report. It is located just 30 minutes from St. Louis and urban attractions such as a lively music scene, microbreweries, and the St. Louis Zoo, ranked the country’s best by USA Today. Edwardsville and surrounding towns are great places to live, featuring amenities from shopping to wineries to hundreds of miles of bike trails. Local communities have won awards including best small towns and top schools in towns you can afford by Money magazine. The SIUE campus is a beautiful oasis of 2660 acres, including 380 acres dedicated to the Nature Preserve, which features forested bluffs, restored grasslands, and lakeshore habitats. The SIUE campus has also dedicated more than 20 acres to preservation of 11MS99, a multicomponent archaeological site and home to our archaeology field school. The site lies at the base of the bluff next to Cahokia Creek, just 20 minutes upstream from Cahokia, largest archaeological site north of Mexico and the center of an especially rich archaeological region, the American Bottom. This area has been a great place to live for thousands of years, and it’s a great place to live today. In the Anthropology Department at SIUE, we are known for providing excellence in undergraduate education, offering majors and minors in Anthropology, and also coordinating interdisciplinary minors in Native American Studies, Forensic Sciences and a post-baccalaureate certificate in Museum Studies. The hallmark of our department has long been our hands-on approach with students, actively engaging them in our research and mentoring them as they undertake their own original research, field projects, lab research, volunteer positions, internships, and study abroad. A newer educational mission for us is our critical contribution to a growing multidisciplinary Masters program in Cultural Heritage and Resource Management. Facilities and resources available to both faculty and our students include not only 11MS99 and the SIUE Nature Preserve, but also newly renovated anthropology teaching and research labs, SIUE’s IRIS Center for digital research, and SIUE’s University Museum, which holds a collection of over 10,000 ethnographic and archaeological artifacts. Collaborating institutions in our region include a variety of museums, historic sites, and archaeological sites, such as the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum in St. Louis, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, the Madison County Historical Society in Edwardsville, and the Illinois State Museum in Springfield.
