Cornell University is composed of thirteen colleges and schools and the land grant university of New York State. Cornell’s unique combination of privately endowed and publically-financed units creates extraordinary resources for research, scholarship, and interdisciplinary education. Cornell is located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York about 220 miles northwest of New York City by road and 220 miles from Toronto. The Department of Anthropology is in the College of Arts and Sciences which has 4,000 undergraduates, 1,500 graduate students, 600 faculty members, and 50 departments and programs. The University as a whole has about 19,000 students, 4,200 of whom are graduate students, 1,520 faculty members, and one of the largest research libraries in the country. The Department of Anthropology has 24 faculty members and offers degree programs at the BA, MA, and Ph.D. levels with 100 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. Tenure track faculty members receive a full panoply of benefits including retirement, health, and a children’s tuition program. Tenure track faculty are entitled to study leaves with pay after 6 consecutive semesters of full-time teaching and sabbaticals after 12 semesters.
