University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame, founded in 1842 by Edward F. Sorin, a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, is an independent, national Catholic university located at Notre Dame, Indiana, adjacent to the city of South Bend and approximately 90 miles southeast of Chicago. South Bend is in the center of a metropolitan area with a population of more than a quarter-million people. Notre Dame has a unique spirit. It is traditional, yet open to change. It is dedicated to religious belief no less than scientific knowledge. It has always stood for values in a world of fact. It has kept with Fr. Sorin's vision of a great Catholic university.
