T.T. and W.F. Chao Professor of Transnational South Asian Studies

Position: Associate or Full Professor holding the endowed T.T. and W.F. Chao Professorship of Transnational South Asian Studies, in the T.T. and W.F. Chao Center for Asian Studies (CCAS) at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas. Salary commensurate with qualifications. Appointment begins July 1, 2019.
Responsibilities: Participate as integral and active member of CCAS in teaching, research, journal publication, mentoring, and various collaborative activities; serve as Chair of CCAS’s Asian Studies Graduate Affairs Committee for its new MA; serve as CCAS Director at some point after the initial appointment.
Qualifications: Geographic specialization in South Asia and transnational South Asia; demonstrated interest and expertise in transnational circulations (movement of peoples, products, ideas, values, beliefs, images, technologies, etc. within and/or beyond Asia); research proficiency in one or more South Asian languages. PhD in anthropology, history, religion, or sociology or related interdisciplinary field. Tenure will be held in the relevant department in Rice’s School of Humanities or School of Social Sciences.

The Chao Center for Asian Studies was founded in 2008 with a generous gift from the T.T. and W.F. Chao Foundation. The Center focuses on transnational, transhistoric, diasporic, and global movements of the peoples and cultures of Asia in its teaching and research. The Center currently offers the B.A. in Asian Studies and has also designed an MA program in Asian Studies, which it aims to launch by 2020. The Center also houses the Transnational Asia Research Initiative which is an interdisciplinary research unit with four to six postdoctoral fellows.
