The Archaeological Research Facility (ARF) is an interdisciplinary, academic organization of scholars and practitioners interested in the human past and how people engaged with their environments successfully as well as the dynamics of social life, including social inequality, urbanism and politics over the long term of human history. The Archaeological Research Facility is based at 2251 College Building, U.C. Berkeley, as an organized research unit serving all archaeological related scholars across the UCB campus. Current activities include: the maintenance of five archaeological related laboratories and a spectrum of shared field equipment for research purposes, regular in-house workshops to train people on useful equipment and software for field and laboratory research, the publication of a monograph series; weekly lectures for the archaeology community on campus and beyond, the organization of two public talks a year; managing working groups, an annual professional workshop bringing people who work in the business side of the discipline, including federal, state agencies as well as companies, managing grants that are located in the Archaeological Research Facility, managing the endowments and gifts that are located in the Archaeological Research Facility, and supporting a public engagement program.
Under the direction of the faculty director, the program associate will contribute to the Archaeological Research Facility's long and short term strategic plan. This will include contributing to the development strategy, the incubation of new initiatives the Archaeological Research Facility; by conducting background research on key topical issues; managing relationships with faculty and other stakeholders; planning for and supporting the management of new programs, and contributing to our dissemination efforts. The ideal candidate will be energized to contribute to the long-term success of a dynamic organization while expanding and deepening their skills in project management, partnership development, and research coordination. He or she will work closely with the Archaeological Research Facility Director and the Laboratory Manager.
Development: • Work with the Archaeological Research Facility director to develop and implement a multiyear fund-raising strategy. • Coordinates efforts with a variety of external and internal contacts; researches organizational structures, policies and procedures and summarizes best practices in field. • Cultivate new and existing donor relationships to increase funding opportunities for the various programs and activities of the facility. Manage relationships with researchers in the Archaeological Research Facility's network, as well as partner organizations and other stakeholders in archaeological-related research communities to increase contacts and donor base. • Research and draft competitive grant funding opportunities relevant to the Archaeological Research Facility in coordination with director and faculty researchers within the Archaeological Research Facility network. • Drafting of grant proposals and summaries of new initiatives supported by the Facility.
Program Cultivation: • Monitor external and UC research and policy initiatives relevant to the Archaeological Research Facility's internal research & programmatic activities. • Participates on policy and planning committees and working groups. • Support research lectures and presentation dissemination, compile and summarize recent research activities, scholarly production and related news from the Archaeological Research Facility and affiliates for the Archaeological Research Facility listserve, website and digital newsletter. • Reaching out to the broader public about the Archaeological Research Facility, including making public presentations on behalf of the Archaeological Research Facility and its goals. • Develop program materials including brochures, website content, posters, and other collateral.
• In the absence of the laboratory manager oversee essential laboratory compliance with federal regulations, including Eco factual and mineral specimen and collection registration processes to ensure all the Archaeological Research Facility samples are properly logged in the Archaeological Research Facility's curation facilities. • Have working knowledge of the Archaeological Research Facility equipment so that, in the absence of the laboratory manager, proper procedures will be followed for checking in and out equipment. • Tracking grant funding of the Archaeological Research Facility's research initiatives in consultation with the Financial Analyst.
• Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. • Knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs. Analytical/problem-solving skills. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff; both verbally and in writing. • Strong skills in analyzing and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals. • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. • Knowledge of or has an interest in archaeological issues and its current events in the Northern California region. Being up to date in basic archaeological research trajectories to be able to direct queries about professional equipment use as well as engage donors regarding archaeology. • Some experience in grant writing. • Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs including MS Office and Google apps. Some knowledge of drupal would be useful. • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, academics and the public, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to translate complex scientific findings into accessible, non-technical language. • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, including problem-solving, trouble-shooting and a solid ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. • Demonstrated initiative, professional maturity, and a proactive spirit (e.g. the ability to anticipate leadership needs). • Ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, while remaining flexible, proactive, tactful, resourceful and efficient, and with a high level of professionalism. • Ability to work well in a team environment. • Ability to maintain a sense of humor and positive attitude when faced with challenges and uncertainty. • Wiling to handle archaeologically oriented equipment.
• A bachelors degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Classics, Near Eastern Studies, Museum Studies, CRM or related disciplines.
