DUTIES: The Interdisciplinary Social Science (ISS) program at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Environmental Anthropology to begin in August, 2018
ISS is housed in the Department of Society, Culture and Language, which also contains degree programs in Anthropology, Criminology, Forensic Studies and Justice, and World Languages. Applicants must have their Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship. Preference will be given to applicants who have expertise on indigenous societies and their relationship with their natural and social environments, emphasizing indigenous adaptation in a neo-colonial context towards the protection of their cultural and natural landscapes. The ideal candidate will also show an expertise on the intersections of gender, ethnicity and class.
The candidate will teach core courses for the ISS program, including Introduction to Social Sciences, and the Senior Seminar in Social Science, as well as courses in his or her specialty, particularly courses on environmental anthropology, ethnicity, gender, and the relationship between indigenous cultures and nature. Faculty in the ISS program teach courses that often support other degree programs, such as anthropology and geography; collaboration with disciplinary units is encouraged. This position will also support the development of the Sustainability Studies degree by developing and offering courses related to cultural and social sustainability, particularly in indigenous societies.
The successful applicant for this 9 month position will have an outstanding potential for significant research, be passionate about teaching undergraduates in an interdisciplinary context, and show demonstrated commitment to service and working across disciplinary boundaries.
The successful candidate will be expected to conduct original scholarly research, contribute to the development of new courses, support student success, and work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications: Completed and earned doctoral degree in Anthropology from an accredited institution by August 1, 2018 with achievement in teaching, academic research and service. Must meet University criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants experienced in teaching environmental anthropology and courses on ethnicity and gender, with demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching, learning, student success, academic service and research productivity.
