The Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Anthropology to start in late-August 2018. This is a full-time, tenure track position with a 9-month renewable contract.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Anthropology or related field by the appointment date. Strong candidates will have strengths in both social theory and its application to real world scenarios. We expect applicants to have substantial experience doing ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation with a strong commitment to public, participatory, and community work. Strong candidates will have expertise in environmental anthropology, sustainability studies, placemaking, critical urban studies, and/or community engagement.
Tenure and promotion will be based on six areas: 1) teaching, 2) advising and mentoring, 3) service to the Wofford community, 4) community engagement, 5) publications, and 6) professional involvement. Performance evaluations will be conducted by faculty in the Sociology and Anthropology Department, faculty peers on the Tenure Committee, and the Provost.
The new Assistant Professor will teach two undergraduate courses per semester plus one course in the January term. One of the two regular-semester courses will be embedded in the Spartanburg community of Northside, which is adjacent to the college. In lieu of teaching a third course per semester (which is required of regular social science faculty at Wofford), the new professor will mentor undergraduate student internships and community-based research projects, which will require the professor to engage with the Northside community to generate productive internships for our students. The job will also entail working with staff in Wofford’s Center for Community-Based Learning to build meaningful local partnerships with both public and private organizations for curricular and co-curricular activities. The new hire will be encouraged to include comparative analyses of personal welfare in global and local communities, including the cases of Spartanburg’s Northside and Glendale neighborhoods.
Please submit a cover letter; a curriculum vitae with educational background, employment history, and list of publications; a one-page teaching statement; a one-page statement on your philosophy about community engagement; and at least two syllabi of undergraduate courses that you would be interested in teaching. Address the cover letter to Sustainability Search Committee and email all materials as a single PDF file to SustainabilitySearch@wofford.edu. The Committee will begin reviewing applications on October 16, 2017. The Committee will request letters of recommendation after the initial review of applications.
